That's how it works in our house as well, we work the same shift but she has days off during the week and gets home earlier than I do. She's good at keeping it going and she also starts the stove once and a while. The good thing about this beautiful fireview stove, once you light a fire it's very easy to keep it going, coals last for ever in this thing! All in all, it's all about teamwork and keeping warm without using oil!!
Lots of things in here I could quote, but this one struck me. My team, which consists of me myself and I, works very well together. It's like we're in each other's skin. My wife's idea of adding wood is to open the door, throw a piece of wood in on a very few coals helter skelter, close the door and walk away. Let's not concern ourselves with air control or any of that silly stuff. I don't think she's ever actually started the fire. That's where "the team" comes into play. I must say though, she LOVES the fire and heat.
I have been a firestarter my whole life, one of my fav Stephen King stories! I have yet to try my skills in a stove, but have over 30s years of experience starting fires in many ways in all kinds of conditions. I have had experiences where a man decided they were in charge of building and starting a fire. I just said "fine, go for it..." and stood back and watch them fumble around trying to light large logs with paper. Ahhh who needs TV when you can get comedy like that whilst camping. I am not saying all men were like that, just a select few haha. To me bulding a fire is almost instinctual, and I can tweak the wood at any time to control the fire to my liking. For the record, it has been over a year since I have used matches or lighter to start a fire. Sparking up a fire with a ferro rod is such a gratifying experience. I agree that everyone should know how to start and build a fire, it could save their life some day!
YES! My mom got me into him when I was very young, started reading his stories when I was 8. When I lived in Ft. Lauderdale I spotted a man that used to frequent the store by our house who could have been SK's twin, right down to the glasses. I remember the day I was out with my mom and spotted him, I pointed with great excitement and exclaimed "LOOK LOOK! It's Stephen King's clone!" Love me some King for sure!
King is one of my favorites also. The novel Insomnia really impressed me with his twisted imagination. Maybe not his best novel but I certainly remember during and after reading it being impressed by his imagination. Not even sure why. The gunslinger series is awesome and The Stand is one of my favorite books and movies. As for starting fires. My personal favorite story is where I walked into my house under construction. There's my wife and FIL on their knees in front of the Large fireplace trying to get a fire started. They failed to open the damper and never realized it. Smoke was rolling over their heads and the house was full to about chin level. A pic or video of that would have been awesome.
Oh my gosh, I was about to say how much I like Insomnia, I have read it 3 times and was just about to read it again! It is a looooong book. I love The Stand as well, m-o-o-n that spells AWESOME!
Trying real hard to get through The Talisman, and then the sequel, Black House. It's a tough slog so far. I need to get in the mood or something. Maybe when it gets colder and I'm hibernating.
I have Black House, I love how it ties in with the Dark Tower and Gunslinger series. Still need to read Talisman. From A Buick 8 also touches down in the Dark Tower stuff too. Ok we have officially hijacked this thread lmfao.
Yep, full hijack. But,,,,,, Papadave, if you get to insomnia make sure your in the mood. Very slow starter. Think of Poes Tell Tale Heart with a twist of insanity. Dusty it's been many years since I read the Talisman. If memory serves it also has ties to the gunslinger series. I also like that about kings books. It's also up near the top of my favorite list. Part of what I would call kings adventure series or Mark Twain with the same twist of insanity. If I ever found out where all these books were I might never get anything done so I don't look.
I've read pretty much most of the novels, and Insomnia is one of 'em I read quite a while ago. Somehow, I got one of my daughters hooked on his stuff too. Seems like I may have already read Black House, and The Talisman, but it's been a while. The Dark Tower series confused me, but I think it took me a long time to read 'em all and I prolly read 'em out of sequence. Supposed to be a movie in Jan. of '17.
In all honesty I think my wife runs the stove better than I do. I fuss too much about stack temps and surface temps going for the longest burn etc. She just keeps the house warm without all the fuss
My wife's fine with starting a fire too, lots of experience here with her shift work. Doesn't do it as fast as I do but the end result is the same and I don't criticize her for doing it differently..
Looks like FHC needs a bookworm forum...need to pull thread back on topic...how 'bout one of y'all female types set some wood on far and post pics, QUICK!
Mrs. M.B. is awesome! She is helping me understand our new stove. She tends to shut down the air faster than I would. I can't say who's right, sometimes it needs it, and sometimes it doesn't. We both agree that smoke out the stack is the final judgement. In summary, we are both learning to trust the stove at higher temps in order to get more efficient burns, without over firing. It's a delicate balance and we are both learning it.
Same thing here, it would be a lot colder around here without her stovetending. She has been doing it since "82"
maybe in the hobbies section ? we have had what are you listening to for a while why not a what are you reading thread ? could be fun i know many people read on electronic gizmos now and thats fine but i still like books and magazines ( although magazine quality is going down fast ) i will read most anything to keep myself from the tv ,so any interest folks ? and yes women can build fires just fine.
