The remainder were hauled in the trailer or the truck.

Yeah aint it purdy ! My wood gathering is pretty economical, usually go once a month when I go into town to shop about ½ hr from my place so I don't use much more gas than usual, the mill puts it out for people to take for free, if the free pile is empty I used to go into the mill to load up but eventually they gave me the boot and started asking for $$$$$. the wood is about as green as it gets, if you place flat sides together it'll freeze solid, I let it sit for years and make sure I have lots of dry wood before cutting and refilling the wood sheds. sure can't beat the price :)

That's great that it's free! I guess you always take your trailer to town. How often do you come home empty? It would be nice to have a buddy in town who could call you when the mill drops a load. I guess it dries just as well long, makes it easier to stack rather than cutting it to stove length. You've got a nice system.

If you still haul in the car, post your pictures in the "car hoarding thread" in the "wood pile" section of the forum.
Welcome to the FHC ~smokey~ :handshake: nice to have you on board! Great group of folks here!

These days I'm only using the truck which along with the roof rack hauls a decent amount of wood, I've come home only a few times with less than a full load but I'm still learning the tricks of the trade, I keep checking the mill in between running around town, I've often wished I had a buddy living across from the mill LOL. I'm glad you like my set up, I've stolen this pic from your profile this is so cool ! did you make it yourself?

Roof racks! Brilliant! After all, it's lumber, sort of.
metalcuttr made that for me, beautiful, isn't it? He's made pieces for other FHC members as well. They are gifted, or given in drawings, at our get togethers. I wish I had more pictures but they are scattered all over the site. IMG_20190504_205200721.jpg

I've moved on from my first wood shed which was a 4' x 8' sheet of plywood nailed to the fence.

Now I have about 50' of mostly 3 rows of 16" so 4' wide by 6' high of cut wood storage, some of it stays dry.

    woodshed1.JPG woodshed2.JPG woodshed3.JPG woodshed4.JPG woodshed5.JPG

This one measures 4' wide at the front expanding to 6' at the back by 6' high.

Another smaller wood shed for chunks and green stuff

Cut up stacked kindling and more hiding under the deck.

Your slab stacks are mesmerizing to look at. And I see you also hoard boards, from pallets and demolition? I really like how you burn primarily salvaged wood. We have a Newfoundland member, TrinitySouth99, who is building a garage out of pallet wood and some dimensional lumber. 2019-10-27-19-11-54.jpg
He mostly posts on the What's up today (bullchiting) thread.
Are you burning any of your stash yet? I've been having morning fires. One place to get to know a lot of members here is Colder here. What's your temp? What ya burnin?

Thanks Midwinter, whenever the mill was empty I usually came home with pallets, I've processed over 300 pallets so I'm pretty tired of them don't plan on getting any more ! but that garage Trinity is building is pretty sweet, lumber is so expensive now you gotta get creative sometimes and save a bunch of money. thanks also for all the links. I've been spoiling myself I fired up the stove since mid September but it's not really cold yet, tonight it's a balmy +36°F - +2°C.

I was working today and a PU drives by with a load of pallets in the back. I later left and it was the next door neighbor. Two guys with a circular saw cutting them up.. I was enjoying the smell of his fire as i was outside all day and the wind was blowing in the right direction.

Are those hardwood/softwood or mixed? Do you sort them that way ~smokey~ ?

New guy here to this site. Just a scrounger from Iowa. This is what my 12 yr old and I picked up Saturday. 40” dia ash that split exceptionally well. The boy was having a blast with the fiskars after the splitter chunked them down.
I sure like all the content you all share here and yes I got the hoarder bug a few years ago 7B020EB0-7862-4431-B7F2-89198A76B2FD.jpeg 5BC1E7DD-560F-4CC8-A0C0-8CA26BFB76B6.jpeg AFD64015-75BC-4F83-BD13-298827638354.jpeg

Welcome Phil121! Quite a few Iowans showing up here recently. Good idea turning your boy loose on nice straight ash, early success will keep him coming back to it.

Welcome Phil121 When my two boys were that age they didn't mind splitting by hand. It builds good character. What part of Iowa do you call home?
