On another side note my 7 year old daughter is just like.............me. Hahahahaahahahahaha. Organize, organize, organize!!!
Still here and still splitting wood from last year. I turned the wood spigot off for now. We cut down and split several oaks of our own. My tractor broke and I thought I'd replace it with a red or orange one and surprise I got a white one. Need to make more skids but honestly no Rush. I am on a 5 yr plan now. Just about organized and ready for winter. Will start splitting again soon. I'll get some pics later and post them. truckload-of-old-white-oak-if-you-want-it
Nicest load of tree service wood ive ever seen. Bark on too. A living ash tree is getting to be a rare sight these days. Never seen such even lengths! Id even swap some BL for that! Ill trade you a locust round for an eclair???
Awesome thread. I had a neighbor who sold a Kubota to a tree guy I know (not my main man) just recently. What?? Willingly giving up the locust?? Actually I could use more locust. I've got way more ash than locust....the wood I'm really listing to burn is the juniper. I'd love more of that too! Yeah my tree buddy really came through with the bucking. Well worth the price of a logrite hookaroon and while I do enjoy using the chainsaw it really does save me some time and effort by not having to deal with shorties and an assortment of lengths. I do have to trim a handful of pieces but for the most part the logs just need to be split. You're not too far - about 2 hours - I'm right at the Tappan Zee bridge. Happy to give you an eclaire!
Today was a take-it-easy kind of day. Didn't sleep well. Whipped out the chainsaw and trimmed some of the longer pieces down a bit. Neighbor came by in a Ford Explorer with his son and took the smaller limbs and now the donation pile is almost all gone. Made two trips. I made some nice progress on the rounds yesterday. Tomorrow 9am I have tennis. Wed 11am I have tennis. Friday 10 am I have tennis. Sat 10am massage. It's going to be an active week. Yesterday after I had already finished working on my pile and cleaned up. Today after the neighbor came by.
Those e'clairs look awesome! Those are my favorite pastries, and I'm a sucker for donuts. If that's her first attempt, you are in trouble. You can send some my way to keep you from eating too many. Ok with regards to EAB, yes you are correct in that they only go after the sapwood. So just under the bark.
Oct-17 when I got the wood: Yesterday, 8 days later: I gave a lot of smaller rounds away (4"-8") and there is still a small pile of crotches I'll most likely take to the dump and about 4 pieces I need to whip out the splitter for.... My neighbor Matt also came by and split about a 1/3 cord from the "nice" pile....and had another neighbor come by and clean up almost all of the "ugly" pile.
Fun times indeed! Reminds me of that video..... Last pic shows cutoffs I gave to my buddy. This is my german neighbor who stopped by to split with his new x27. Woo hoo! Showed him how to do kindling as well with some spruce shorties I had. I gave him 4 rounds of spruce so he can make some more at home.
Quite a motherload and nice work. I had to get up for a snack after seeing the eclairs. Great thread also.
It has that effect on people, eh? Ja, in der Tat hatte er eine tolle Zeit. Ich musste erklären, was ein holz hausen war. Hahahahaha. Google übersetze ftw.
heck yeah, love a good ash haul. I always say overall ash is my favorite wood. It's usually plentiful, often times half dead, seasons quickly (though I still have mine sit 3 years), splits easy enough and starts up quick in a cold stove. It's not the highest BTU wood out there but given all of it's other qualities it's my favorite. How can you tell red ash from white ash??? I think I always just considered everything I got to be white ash.
Red ash has a distinct red tone that goes from the bark towards the center if you're looking at the bottom of the round. The heartwood is white. WAhite ash does not have that hue of red and is just white throughout the entire round. Red ash also smells a bit more pungent and has a more bitter smell to it. White ash is more herby in smell, lighter, sweeter, and more faint. Not so in-your-face. Red ash: White ash (not the best pics):
