Split off the Goldilocks rounds and added to stack. Also split the deadfall oak which ended up having a good deal of punky sapwood hanging on in places. Messy. The stuff that was decent went to my friend's mother's house. My buddy who was helping me will take this for his smokeless pit. Load that I gave to friends mom. She was very grateful. Quartered the other oak log and staged it.
Crummy weekend. Rain Saturday so went to a gunshow and looked around. Kinda fun to look but unless you go there for trading you're best to find deals elsewhere. This is a recurring pattern I've seen. Checked out some cool old ammunition boxes one man had collected. I like that stuff. Ended up buying a gift for a friend that an 11 year old boy made with a 3D printer and some targets for myself. I really liked this particular target for fine tuning my rimfires. Made it to the woods yesterday for a little bit. Dropped some corn and changed cards in the cams. Went and ripped a couple mags from my CP33 for something to do after being inspired looking at the gunshow. I don't often get fox on my cams. You only gotta make it two more weeks big fella then home free till next fall. Had 27 Turkey in one photo. Couple of nice beards. Up and comers.
Went and gave the deer some corn and got a dozen bundles done Saturday. Stuffed them all in the stand. Have few more bags in there than normal due to movement. Easy to see where the turkeys have been feeding. Also made my once a year trip to Harbor Freight to take advantage of a sale on fake Pelican cases. $132 total for all. I was a wuss yesterday and didn't want to be in the cold. 'Maybe next weekend will be better...' Nope, gonna be colder if weatherman is right.
Oof. Went to drop some corn yesterday and noticed the wood stand was wiped clean. Spent a bit yesterday in 10 degrees making more. My buddy is now collecting unusually large RC cars. lol
I made up some bundles yesterday too. Luckily I had a bunch assembled as a regular ran out and had to deliver. Drove by another regular and he was almost out too. Looks like I'll be shoveling to the bundle wood shed sooner than I wanted.
The cold weather is driving firewood sales crazy and it seems a lot of the customers are the ones that procrastinated
They shut our town down over 9" of snow. No ice, just snow. I'm off work today because of. I live on a rural road and the pavement is visible. Why do people love to justify their panic? Justification comes from the shutdown....all the scurrying about before hand. 20 years ago I drove through more to get to work and it wasn't even a thought. We're doomed.
Did some gun stuff Sunday during the big fluff. The Tract went onto the Savage precision lite 22wmr. The Ruger precision got the Sightron. I am now out of my favorite rings again.
Sigh. Am I gonna do this tomorrow? Progress at a stand still lately. Everything is gonna have 6" of snow on it and the buggy will be grumpy to start. I'm somewhat starting to acclimate so it won't feel quite so bad if the wind isn't uppity. Will plan to make some bags and if I'm feeling froggy I'll split those oak quarters after. Ironic that there is no mud, but the air temps have been keeping me shuttered indoors. I do not yet have a broken trail up to the woods woodyard. A little snow can turn that hill into a mountain.
Ran thru the rest of my orange sacks and now into green. Made a few dozen Saturday. Stand been getting worked over. Have a dozen laid back. Expecting to be wiped out again this week. I'm not so sure that I am not someone's primary source of heat for the volume considering location. No one from town is going to drive down to it. Had a late night Friday rager playing Monopoly with some good friends. I didn't win. Had to forfeit due to heavy eyelids. Got some new sawse. Not much more heat than the Ghost stuff (fairly diluted, both). More vinegary which is right up my alley.
We need an FHC version of monopoly. Be interesting to see if someone came up with a version. The snow cover is really getting to me as well. Cant cut let alone stack. Gonna take a good look at the wood yard tomorrow to see what I can work on. Gonna involve some shoveling! Good that your bundle sales are doing well. Tis the season. If it was 20* warmer they wouldn't sell. With todays delivery im up to 400 bundles for 2026 so far plus 12 smoker bundles. Extended forecast for below average temps so I'm expecting them to continue to be strong. I have another 30 going out tomorrow.
I'm finding it pretty wild that my middle of nowhere site is being patronized. Didn't have anything like this last winter and have been pleased when seeing 3-4 go over course of a week. These people are trying to make me work! lmao Also...I'm eyeballing my supply and future supply and this kinda depletion makes me anxious about having good stuff ready later. Still have a fat cord of primo chestnut oak. 3/4 cord of white oak that could use another summer of drying to be optimal. Then onto the red maple, maybe half cord which I hope to be good to go this fall. I been eyeballing standing dead red mapos to try to get some more stock that won't need much if any dry time. The thought of not having wood to fill or filling it with not dry wood really bothers me. More about failing to maintain expected service than money honestly but that's in my wiring.
Somebody bought some and has told others and has returned. Good product will sell itself. Im sure deep snow and colder temps have helped. Im the same way with worrying about having supply on hand. I separate out the nice splits to be used in bundles, wont use multi year drying or high BTU woods in them although some oak and hickory has been used as of late. Mostly maple and a mix of lower BTU/SS woods usually. Yesterday's bundles were a mix of dead ash with a split of cherry, (some nice heartwood splits put aside for smoker sales) sugar maple, cottonwood, silver maple , and TOH thrown in. Todays will be the same minus the cherry. Gotta raid a general cordage stacks first. I've told the newer accounts I may not be able to sell them more and explain the dry wood reasoning behind it.
It's labelled as a Bannon. Gorilla and another company also market them. Advice: Get the model with flotation tires. I think capacity is 1600lbs. I can just nearly fit enough in/on it to stuff the 59.5" long Nissan bed with packed splits. If I add a little to the buggy bed I can get a full bedload stacked. Of course you also have to stack/pack the trailer when loading. Highly recommend some sort of cart/trailer. I use mine quite a lot for moving wood. Can be a little bothersome backing due to the 4 wheel setup. It can be tough to convince the trailer to start to turn sometimes in reverse. That and the sub par 8 tire setup are my only beefs. OK so now norhtern calls them 'Strongway' Same with different paint and has the good tires. https://www.northerntool.com/products/strongway-utility-trailer-1600-lb-load-capacity-6045496
