I also quickly walked over to see if the cherry was rotted or not. I think I was right about the ants. This is a neighboring cherry to it. If it's not full of bug holes I'd bet that's some crazy looking wood.
Just going to throw this out there... when i get chunk of wood with this "U" shape grain pattern. I flip the chunk around, so the wedge is going into "U" shape. Usually makes a clean split that way... instead of fighting the grain.
There was good wood on the back sides of those pieces. Just needed to break it down so's I could orient it correctly to peel off.
Taking the day off from the woods. Got a light cover of snow last night (melted already) so all that mud that was starting to tack up is now jellified again. Just freeze dammit!
It started to snow instead of rain so off to the woods. Got a load hauled back to the yard. Couldn't quite squeeze the whole pile on. Didn't want to fight the jumpers. Switching to light rain as I type. Time to retreat.
Sunday was a complete bust. Didn't get anywhere near the woods. Looking like we'll have some hard ground next week. Might be able to go after the Hickory I've been waiting to get.
Yeah same here with snow, snow cover and rain coming Wednesday. Maybe able to do something tomorrow if enough melts today. Checking out an easy score today. Found on FBM
I'm talking a big talk right now...Sunday morning when it's 17 and the tractor don't want to crank it may be another story. Will have to see how much wind we're getting with this cold front rolling in. The heater in the buggy allows me to work in the colder temps for the most part. A place to take refuge and warm hands back up. Gonna trhow up a fresh CL ad for some splits and see if the impending weather will allow some sales.
Weve had a couple "normal" Winter days Friday and Saturday and it felt great to make firewood in it. With temps like that id be taking refuge too! With milder temps i get spoiled by wearing only a sweatshirt over a t shirt. Colder i have thermals underneath. Down vest in PU just in case. Rare i wear the Winter coat. Stay warm and hoard on my friend!
Brrr. Needed a saw fix so off I went. Saved some marking paint. I will quarter them matbe tomorrow when I refill the feeder. It was just gusting too hard today. Was covered in chips and frass. Been a busy place for no longer than it's been active.
Well, at least it was sunny out. No cutting today. Took the truck up to fill the feeder. It would've taken half an hour to warm up the buggy.
Lot of folks shy about Makita chainsaws due to parts availability. About to place another smalls order for 7900 & 5001 spares. Fuel lines, fuel/oil caps, diaphragm kits, on/off switch, air filters, oiler repair kit, AV spring set. Hesitant to get coils...I think I read they sorted those and they are pretty spendy. A box of things to keep the saws alive for their *planned 20+ years of service. Will get to 'building' the 5001 hopefully later this year as I have a couple of goodies in a non-cat muff and a non-asisted pull start assy (slims the saw a bit). The hard part is getting the correct label/decal for the starter. I'm gonna throw a part # at them and hope it sticks.
Repeat customer. Likes oak. Had to pick the pile a bit and ended up with a few nice sugar maple splits in it also. Not idea conditions for loading. Ground too soft. He wanted two loads. Hurried and got this one out before the rain starts again so he won't worry about running out. He was working in his yard cleaning up a few branches. Stopped to help me unload a little. Ended up cutting a couple low 8" limbs off a silveraple for him. Diced it and helped carry to his outdoor burn pit. Payment has been floated. He didn't know I was coming today. Trust established. Will catch full payment on next load when the ground is more cooperative.
I hate mud! Had to back to edge of pavement to unload today so i wouldnt destroy the wood yard. Thawed enough after the nice cold spell we had. Ive done the same with customers. Sweet load of wood btw!
Supposed to get two days break from rain. Hoping that means I can do something this weekend. I've got splits to move and restack, stuff to put on the splitter and a pile already finished needing put on the stack. And I still need to get a load out for a customer. Yep, those are premium splits there. A little short for me, but they were made to sell. Tried to split them so they'd go in one of those tater sacks fairly easily if I decide to go that route. Been looking at examples of roadside stands trying to figure out what I want to put together for this summer's test.
Couple more cloudy days then sun forecasted here. No rain or snow though. Havent been to storage in a few days so dont know the condition of the yard mudwise. Gonna work on processing nuggets next time.
Was a fan of mud my entire youth. Wore it regularly and probably ingested a bit as well. Lasted into my teens with my first 4x4 truck. Eventually I grew weary of cleaning things up. Later I would realize that getting muddy is the only thing you can do when it's muddy out. Not wanting to be getting muddy anymore (or destroy the ground whereever I'm working), this limited my activities. Therefore...I 'hate' mud now.
Decided to do some stack management on Saturday. Had a pile to stack and did some restacking on another couple rows. Tarps needed attention. Got that all squared and picked up two more feed bags of kindling from the splitter leavings. Went down to the river lot and picked up sticks for a while. Then decide to go for a buggy ride in the woods. Found this but was not interested at the time. It's White Oak. It crushed a little cherry and a small sugar maple also. Initially thought the 'left' stem would be junk but there is a lot of good wood hiding under that punky sapwood so I will process it. A buddy called yeasterday wanting to run his saw a bit. Well...actually....lol Didn't spend a lot of time on it. Need tractor to finish up and the yard down below is too soft right now. Got it mostly prepped for skidding. Will cut the main stems then pull out and cut off to manageable lengths to drag to processing yard. I may take the trailer over and cut up and haul the smalls with it to save some wear on the trails and tractor. Took a nice walk on some of the dirtbike trails too, making sure they were clear of blowdowns and branches. Really nice day to be in the woods yesterday. Want to add also...still very happy with the Echo 501.
