I already got some great info already from a prior thread on "Wood Splitter Maintenance" so i'm good on the general maintenance stuff such as changing the engine oil and the hydraulic fluid but wanted to ask specifically about lubricating the ram cylinder (chrome rod portion when the wedge is extended), do you lubricate that part as well? And if so with what?

Thanks in advance! I share (more like borrow) my brother in laws splitter and use it probably more than he does so I always try return it in tip top shape and would like to maintenance it for him so it's one less thing he's gotta worry about.

The rod is lubricated through the oil in the cylinder.

There is a wiper seal in the cylinder that wipes all the dirt off as the ram goes back in...it would wipe off any lube you put on it too. That said, if you were to store it outside, or a damp environment for long and the ram was not fully retracted, some type of spray lube could be put on the exposed chrome to keep it from pitting. But the best way to store is to have the cylinder fully retracted.

My Timberwolf has zerc fittings on either side of the push block. I hit those with the grease gun before splitting and run a few lines of grease on the beam and wipe it to cover the whole surface. That comes out of the manual.

If you want your splitter clean, let Molly borrow it. Mine hasn't been that clean since the day I brought it home.

I am concerned about that slow oil drip. It hasn't gotten any worse.

I looked when I was there last, and it definitely didnt look like it got worse. I'm not too concerned about it Midwinter I'll figure it out once I get it home once that oak is split.

it does look bigger on the ground now. I'll see if I can snug up that clamp. FYI, the weather looks better tomorrow than I anticipated. I might be able to make it there in the afternoon depending on work.

Hydraulic...a small leak is not a big deal right there...probably a loose clamp as mentioned...
