Yeah, that'd be the proper tool.

This insert does have a relatively low ash capacity and in my experience with it can get full in a week or so of 24/7 burning. The partially burnt coals make it that much worse. If there is a going to be a warm afternoon I sometimes let it burn down during the day without throwing in a morning load and shovel it out in the evening. Otherwise it is what you figured, separate it.

When I get going. I usually have to shovel ash every 2-3 days!! Wow love to think about going a week!

Yeah, I get about a week or so with ash empty outs, give or take depending on what kind of wood I'm burning.

So you guys will find this funny, because you're all twisted like me. :wacky:

My wife loves to sit in her camp chair by the insert. In the evenings she will set her wine glass down on the hearth. She falls asleep sometimes in the chair and I've heard it twice in the past couple weeks when the glass shatters from getting too hot. It's not even that close to the insert. It's pretty funny, despite the loud pop sound it makes, and the shards of glass.

So, I'm apparently getting some good heat out of the insert.

She's learned her lesson, no real harm to us or the dogs, just that she's down 2 stemless wine glasses.

She's keeping her glass much further away now.

When I started reading this my first thought was she falls asleep and drops the glass as she is doing so. Not sure what temps are required to break a glass, but I would think hot enough that you would not want to touch it. With all that glass, you must be blasting out the heat - when I have flames in the box of my stove the front really radiates a lot of heat and I have a small window compared to glass you have.
