I’ve seen color changes and streaks in hackberry before but never to that extent. I believe hackberry has a lot of natural fungus or something in it that makes it pretty good for mushroom farming. Always figured that is where the color comes from. Also another reason I haven’t considered it for smoker wood.
Looks like you’ve got a very respectable stack going in the background. What else is in it besides hackberry?
So I have Locust Lane along the back of the house (honey and black with one stack of red oak I have to move) then I have Fruitwood Station aka the smoking section going down the side of the house (shagbark hickory, cherry, mulberry, hackberry, burr oak and red oak). Pretty much all the stuff you guys said to get haha. The idea is get an offset smoker and wood stove for the garage in the next year or two. Figured I would get a head start on smoking and burning wood while I can get it free. My postage stamp is nearing capacity though
Powder post beetles typical on honey locust. Makes an unsightly mess but they won't dissolve your stacks completely
Its my understanding the borers like HL and a common problem with it. Take a leaf blower to it every now and then.
I think the last one is part of this giant (red?) willow, not sure on the others. Crotch is probably ash. Any ideas?
I know the willow is junk for firewood but supposedly black and red willow are good for woodworking. Weeping willow maybe not so much. I doubt we have any willow experts on the forum eh?
I was thinking white oak too! The last one looked like red oak at first but aren’t the growth rings too wide on it?
Ive seen reds with wide growth rings. Given ideal growing conditions almost any species will have such.
