Plenty more where they came from.. I "free hand" milled a BW base and a friend with a band mill sliced them up for me. Still haven't used them.
We had a black walnut taken down a few years ago and Chaz had a guy come in mill them for us. I do believe once we get to a point where he has time to set his shop up, he plans to make kitchen cupboards out of them.
Im very familiar with tulip poplar, the mature bark and leaves. The bark on this smaller diameter log and the dark heartwood threw me. What does walnut smell like? Anything like hickory?
First impression, first pic was no, not Walnut, way too much sapwood. But... that isn't unheard of. Next pics, sure looks like Walnut. The smell isn't so much overpowering as it is, distinct, especially to those who already know it, which doesn't help you much. A large component of the smell is from the iodine in the wood, which also accounts for the purple-ish hue the dark wood has. Walnut is much harder and heavier than Poplar, so shouldn't be too hard to distinguish. But a very defining feature of Walnut is if you split it right down the center, the center pith is chambered, like this. A clean shave of the endgrain looks like this; After a couple days exposed, the very white sapwood will begin to oxidize into a light brown and if you shave some of the inner bark & put it in alcohol, it will bleed brown/black that will stain your hands a yellowish brown. Also scroll down into this post. Any Greenwood Carvers here?
very imformative RabbleRouser . Ill check the splits today and post later. After seeing your pics i dont think it is black walnut.
One stump of walnut left at the score. When i cut it i took a good sniff and it had an aroma. Not good, not bad, but a wood smell ive never sniffed before.
