Looks like an old stove that will cleanup pretty nice from what I can see! Check to see if their is a U/L tag somewhere on it, if not your homeowners insurance will not cover you if a house fire would be caused by that stove. If it's hooked up they may not cover you at all. Make sure you check it out first! I hope I didn't burst your bubble?
Good info. Even if its not what you wanted to hear We have a nice one in storage and I thought it would be nice to have it hooked up. Never even thought about insurance regs...
Ways around this guys...if its under a structure that isn't part of the house, the insurance can still mark it as a loss as long as fire/wood burning appliances are considered recreational and not under existing home structure.
Best thing to do is let your insurance company know what you plan to do and put the ball in their court. "I'd like to hook up this stove and want to know if it will change my premium." Put it on them to tell you whether or not you are covered. Save any correspondence from them if approved just in case of a future claim. Plan to install it IAW NFPA 211. Just because something has a UL mark on it doesn't mean that it is compliant with CURRENT UL standards. I'm sure that stove is going to clean up real nice.
No bubble to burst. Insurance company knows about current wood stove and will know about this one. They also know that I don't let them dictate to me like they tried several years ago. They were okay as long as they had snapshots of install.
