With some Red Maple, Oak and Hickory. When I first looked at this job I thought they were river birch but once I started cutting I knew I was in a patch of something good. Start hauling logs tomorrow. The biggest Pecan of the 6 is next to the chipper in this pic. The Short Leaf Pine will go in a mill pile. Cords of Pecan
Second load is Pecan, Red Maple and Oak. The pouring rain turned the site into a mud hole, so the rest of my treasure will have to wait.
Good deal. Im just at the northern edge of native pecan in our area. I have only had a few chances to cut any for firewood. I found it to be excellent.
I’m going to have a Pecan stack and try to sell it to meat smokers. buZZsaw BRAD organizational and entrepreneurial skills have inspired me to segregate my bbq wood. I’ll have cherry, hickory and now Pecan separated from the pack.
Woohoo! That should start bringing in more Benjamins! BL, MB and cherry are what I segregate. The cherry more than likely will get sold as "general cordage" next season.
I grew up down south so always had them around. Moved to Ohio in the late 80's. Bought our current house in 2002 and it has a pecan tree in the back yard. Odds of buying a house in Ohio with a pecan? Has to be really low. Only one so don't usually get many pecans off it....one year it put out a ton for some reason and I actually picked and shelled quite a bit from it. At some point the squirrels found it and they pick it pretty heavy and what they don't pick dies in the hull. I do get some sticks to smoke with every now and then.
Thanks....this is my kinda place. I love forums and Facebook has killed most of them or at least took the traffic down to almost zero. Glad to see this one is pretty active.
I didn’t think they would grow up North. The further south you go the more old Pecan orchards you see. I can think of one in Laurinburg on 15-501 that many have probably passed on their way to Myrtle Beach. Massive open and spreading Pecans. The ones I got were in the woods so they were single stem bending towards the road reaching for more light. There’s a bunch of wood in the open grown trees.
I didn't either so I was shocked. I talked to a couple people about it at the time and I guess it's not unheard of up here.
The only pecan tree I've seen here was in a back yard looking like it was planted there. Mystree Hickory?
X3...what part of Ohio 0rion ? I know southern Ohio is a good bit more temperate than northern...although northern hasnt had a hard winter in a while now...I heard they actually moved the growing zones north...
Yes, and people here treat other members with respect. Its almost like we are all sitting around a fire chatting instead of being behind keyboards.
