Hi everyone, I may have just found internet heaven here.

I grew up in a house that we heated with wood. Of course, as a kid I HATED it, I hated processing firewood every year and of course we had to do a lot of work. Enter "The dark years..."

Well, in 2012 I bought a house with a woostove insert and ordered a few cord of wood. It "rekindled" my love for wood heat and I started processing my own wood last year.

Fast forward to today, I think the obsession is full blown much to the chagrin of my wife. I processed over 10 cord this year and split it all by hand. I also have a penchant for making videos of my exploits, here's my brother and I at my Dad's house last weekend:

Anyway, looking forward to getting to know you all, learning and sharing what I've learned!

    Cheers! - Garry

That was a fun 3 minutes. Nice vid, well choreographed and good choice of equipment - minus the Scion in the background those things look ridiculous.

    Welcome aboard!

Is that the Fiskars Isocore or whatever it is called?

Haha, thanks! Yes - it is the Fiskars Isocore maul. A few years back I got an X27 and loved it but struggled with the bigger stuff. The 8LB Maul vastly outperforms any Lowes/Home Depot mauls and the handle design is great (one quip is it's very grippy and not great at sliding your hands up and down, but that's been improving as it gets dusty/worn a bit). The sledge side is also great for hitting wedges. Split about 4 cord with it this year, love it. My X27 is now collecting a lot more dust than I ever would have thought. Great deal for the $50 or so that I paid on Amazon.

As for the Scion - it's my sister's car. I have a Toyota Tundra. :) They do love it though, very practical for them since they have a baby and the Camry drivetrain that's in it is very reliable.

I figured I'd better start with a bang! I have some older videos on my Youtube Channel (DarthGarry) I'll post them up in here at some point probably. I love splitting wood.

Welcome to the site, great place here. NY is taking over FHC. Even though it's a big state and were on opposite ends.

It was a lot harder to split than I thought it would be, my guess is the way that the bark is formed? Split a bunch of maple that same day and it was cake compared to the birch!

A "Hint" that we may see a hydraulic splitter in the future ?

Welcome to the forum Garry Polmateer

How do you pronounce that town name where you are from?

Good that you are enjoying the cutting and spitting of the wood. Unlike you, I've always enjoyed it even when I was a young lad (many moons ago). I did graduate to hydraulics after an injury to my back and have been smiling ever since when it comes time to split wood. It even works fantastically well for making kindling.

How are you doing on the stacking of the wood? Do you top cover? Do you have a shed? How long do you plan on drying the wood before burning?

Hint: It would be great if you could put some information in your signature line, like what stove you have, what saw and/or tools or anything interesting as this helps others picture what you have and what you work with.

Be sure the check out "Resources" which can be found at the top of the page, right next to "Forums."

I have about 6 cord stacked at my house right now, all aged 0-3 years with it all queued up for burning it FIFO (first in first out) so I'll be burning all 2-3 year old stuff this year. It's just stacked on pallets and covered on top. The stuff in the video is for my Dad, he'll probably wind up burning some late winter but mixed in with some more well seasoned stuff in his woodshed. I'll update my profile & signature, etc. more for sure. I have an Enviro Kodiak 1700 stove for what it's worth and I have lots of tools, most notably my Fiskars Isocore Maul, X27, Husqvarna Rancher 445 (soon to be replaced with a 372XP).

Everyone else thanks for the "warm" welcome :)
