Ever since fishingpol posted about making Bûche de Noël cakes for his wife's birthdays, I have wanted to make one. So campinspecter headed out the door to get a load of wood and as Gasifier always wants to know what treats I will reward him with when he gets back, I decided that today was the day. Here are the links to fishingpol very artistic cakes. Baked goods thread. Can I have a piece now? No, wait! Baked goods thread. Can I have a piece now? No, wait! Here is my unfortunate effort. Tastes great but presentation needs improving. It was the first time I had ever worked with a ganache icing. I really like it but I need more practice. So campinspecter got skunked on wood as it was too frozen to get the log dogs into the wood and winch it up to the splitter. He came home and moved wood down into the basement from our wood storage. I was on a roll so I decided to make him another kind of log. Rolled turkey log. The last of the Christmas turkey was used in this. Served with mushroom gravy.
Both of those look delicious. Is there mashed potatoes and stuffing in the turkey log? What is the outer crust on the turkey log? My wife approves too.
It is a baking powder biscuit recipe rolled out into a rectangle. I soaked some mushrooms I had dried this summer on my new dehydrator, fried some onions with turkey bacon, chopped the rest of the turkey and mixed it with some undiluted mushroom soup, frozen corn and a little bit of relish. I mixed everything together and then spread it over the biscuit dough and rolled it up. Baked for 30 looooong mins at 425 F. campinspecter and I were circling the stove like vultures. Gravy was undiluted mushroom soup mixed with a bit of cream. Edit: It could have been cooked another 5 or 7 mins as the biscuit dough didn't quite cook through to the center.
Everything is gone now. Both were really good. I would like to try making the cake again but not until after I start walking and lose my Christmas gain.
The original recipe called for ground beef mixed like you would for a meatloaf and served with a tomato gravy.
Turkey Roll reminds me of a Pasty. Looks good!
