Ok that is crazy! Is that yours old 040? I pity that poor undersized tranny! Lol. I love ur Honda Big Reds though. I had one and they are a favorite for me because they were the first Utility quads (before there were quads!) and most UTVs. A toy turned into something made to get work done. They had reverse, rear suspension, electric start, racks, accessory tool boxes and a stock removable headlight/worklght in a time you either used a truck or tractor as your only other choice. And in honda fashion there are many that are still doing it 30 years later! Thanks for the pics.

Hey o40 buckman here. Want to pick your brain a bit! Just picked up an 85 big red es but the guy told me the cam chain needs replaced. What's your thoughts! Have to get it running first, been sitting a while, clean the carb and all. Don't know if its slapping or what.

Isn't there a cam chain tensioner on it? Sometimes those wear out. If so you only need to replace that, and not the chain.

I had to replace one on my old '86 trx250 fourtrax, same engine as the '85 big red, yes, it was a pain in the azz on that one, but on the big reds it looks to be a little easier, haven't needed to yet on mine, the cam chain tensioners can only extend out so far and once they reach the end of their tensioning limit, it's time to replace the chain, tough the tensioner pad and guide wear as well, I've got'n away with adding a cap on the end end of the tensioner push pin, it works and will get you by for a while but you really should just replace the chain, guide and tensioner pad......

Yeah, once you get an ATV for firewood use, you'll wonder how you got along without it before.

I'm mildly ashamed at the moment. I don't burn wood right now.:(. We built our home last year and are using a heat pump. I am however building my shop soon with radiant floors and plan on putting a owb to supplement the house and heat the shop.

When she finally comes around Oakman69 , get at least a 500. BTW... the Tatou tracks have evolved so much over the years that you can probably buy a machine with them mounted, and then finance & insure the machine as one package (we did in 2009). Suzuki even had enough confidence in them they still honor all warrantee stuff.

One down fall I have always seen in tracks is if you were to get stuck your going to need a tractor to get you out.

You're right... but... if you run 80% in rear drive only (still will go in deep muck and snow)... you'll always be able to back out in 4x4 loc ... it's like a tank. I see the 2 biggest negatives as... steering is really stiff when on ground or frozen hard pack crusty snow (soft deep snow is much easier)... and, if you ever got tipped sideways in deep snow or muck, you're in big trouble without a winch.
