I bought 10 flower themed pinwheels at the dollar store a week or so ago (they are darling!!) someone on the internet said they would scare the birds off so they don't eat all the seed. :rofl:  WWW put them out Sunday morning, they seemed to work well, (made from kite/parachute/ripstop/whatever material). This morning, a few are destroyed from the wind, missing 1/2 or more of the blades/petals, one had only one petal left that was hanging down. Forgive me, it was comical to put emotions to an inanimate thing like defeat or surrender to a $1 pinwheel.

We had a good time looking hunting for the lost "petals" :D

I went to town today with a friend, picked up some hay, will spread it tomorrow after WWW unloads it. Only other option I was offered was to leash and stake our previously "wild" cat out there:rofl: :picard::rofl:

I'm thinking the wind is going to blow away the hay, hey?

That whole "eh" thing must've been created by a troll...maybe? We pronounce it as it is spelled.

It's just that almost every sentence we speak ends with the required "A" sound at the end....we use that instead of punctuation marks!!

Yep, wind blew the hay into itty bitty snow-drift like piles . I put more out the next day a ran the sprinkler for 20 minutes again, not sure how many gallons but not willing to run out of water in the house either................. The second spreading stayed down long enough until the snow fell:dex: I have some worries that the water and snow might freeze the seeds/sprouts, but also feel like this is my best chance. Wish me luck!! Pic from this afternoon, doesnt look like much but it was atleast 1' by 9 am this morning and snowed all day, lucky the temps are brutal :) Looking forward to nicer weather next week but I also want the snow to hang around for as long as possible :loco:

I highly doubt the seed has been down long enough to germinate. You should be fine regarding it freezing. Don't expect to see germination until the soil temp recovers to 55 degrees minimum. Once the snow is gone, go dig a small spot one inch down and shoot the dirt with your IR stove thermometer to see what you are working with. A digital meat thermometer will also work.

I've had to reseed 2 jobs this spring from a late cold spell that killed off the young seedlings. Don't feel bad. It's part of trying to figure mother nature out....she's obviously indecisive.

WW the snow will help... if the seeds are down with a little hay.. the snow if it melts slowly will moisten the seed ... as long as it warms up and melts slowly.. gramps always called spring snow showers poor man's fertilizer. . he was a farmer

    Its a miracle!!

    IMG_20170528_081643267_HDR.jpg

JK  :rofl:  It was a fail. Not one seed germinated, even where the wind blew the hay into piles where it was consistently insulated and moist...... WWW saw this on sale yesterday, we shall see what parts of it root with limited water, guess pretty dependent on a record wet summer. How funny, the dogs have not done their business on it yet :wacky: Its suburban lawn, think fescue? so not ideal for our zone or yearly rainfall, but....... I've been told that seed is pretty indestructable, I cannot help but wonder if it froze in the bag (remember that one winter is was -37*F ? it was in the garage).

If that was old seed, that was probably the culprit. If forced to use old seed, I normally double the application rate. If you still have the bag, there will be a tag on it with a test date and germination percentage labeled on it. If you habe to use old seeds, next time do a paper towel germination test before hand.

Hope the sod takes root for you!

Does it make any difference if the seed has been kept inside not out in the cold?

Yes they are old, project was slated for fall 2015, but-life got in the way and it did not happen til now. There never was tag, I was surprised, it came from a bulk bin at a feed store. Thanks:)

You really gotta get water and some fert on that sod to get the roots established or it's gonna die on you unfortunately. You only have to water 2 days a week if that helps.

Thanks Babs, this is underneath, fertilizer in it
Amazon.com : Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Food - Starter Food for New Grass, 5, 000-sq ft (Not Sold in Pinellas County, FL) : Fertilizers : Patio, Lawn & Garden

And WWW is bringing home extra water tanks for 2 weeks so we can run the sprinkler 20 minutes a day, does that sound ok? In two weeks we will be weaning off sprinkler every night.

That starter fertilizer is a good start. It's good for root establishment.
