Im sure many folk here keep an eye on CL for wood deals as I do. For most of the real deals I see on CL you would need equipment to grab it quick. Like say a grapple trailer Well I found an add for free firewood delivered. Just had to call. Turns out it's from a successful tree guy that has too much wood coming in and not enough going out. He has regulars that will come pick up the wood. They take the nice easy logs. For free he will, deliver the big chunks they don't want. Anyhow seeing as it's a 40 minute drive one way we cut a deal. For a 100 bucks he'll deliver big logs but not the real knotty twisted stuff. His truck holds 2.5-3 cords once split and stacked. Big stuff is more work but bark has little BTU,s I think it's a great deal. What say the jury?
that is cheap! less than 50 a cord delivered.. unheard of price in the north! do you have area to process after delivered?
Yep. 3.5 acre field right across the road. It's where I do all my stuff already. I'm just getting to the point where it would be nice to have wood dropped at my feet instead of gathering it all myself.
for less than 50 a cord.. it's a no brainer.. it's got to take that in wear tear on vehicles gas and gloves... I usually get logs to big for processors so little under 2 feet diameter... haul them from farm to house with Kubota 2 miles.. I would still pay 50 a cord to my processing area out back! I sometimes break stuff you got room to process it (meaning not in you driveway blocking in your wife car... depending on what you need to get ahead.. I'd slap him a few hundred quick! before he changes his mind.. log length here goes for about a hundred a cord delivered.. but Vermont is expensive. ..
Yep bout 100 a cord log length delivered down here too. Problem is not many people who do it and none near me. Delivery fees tacked on if they'll make the trip at all. Every year I think I'm getting ahead with the three year plan. Then poof it's gone. Three houses, at least twelve cord a year makes it tough. I don't want to be pushy but your right. I should order up a couple three loads just to let him know I'm serious. Thought I did that while cutting the deal but it wouldn't hurt to get my name higher on the list.
if you need 12 cord a year it's tough I know! been there and done it! I am glad you said 3 houses cause I do not want to see a house that needs 2 IS and 6 cord a piece to feed them... but to buck split and stack 12 cord by yourself (35 to 40 to get on 3 year plan) yeah get it delivered!!!
Your right. It hasn't happened yet. He did call me back to confirm my address and put me on the list. That's a good sign. Put in an order for three loads to start. Just hoping he's as pleased by the deal as I am.
I think we ALL want a grapple trailer. Nice score, post up pics when it's delivered. . Do you have any idea of the species of trees you'll be getting?
I can't even imagine getting free wood delivered. Yes, you will work hard to work it up, but distance, travel time etc. is off set considerably. Just get yourself tooled up for handling the big stuff, (not your back) and you have it in control. YouTube has all sorts of videos about cutting up large wood for firewood. Big thing I would think about is cutting it up right where he dumps it so to avoid any lifting of the big stuff.
Yes I suppose I'm not the only poster here enamored with the idea of a grapple trailer. Who woulda thunk. Big trees in Ct are usually Maple or Oak. I saw some ash and cherry in the pile along with some pine. I'm good with all that stuff. It all has its purpose. You betcha savemoney. I'll cut and split right where it sits. Toss the splits straight from the splitter onto the Mason dump and drop em wherever I stack. The old spine has had a tough life. It constantly reminds me of that.
Our town used to deliver logs from trees they cut for free because they have to pay to get them hauled away and figure its better to give it to the residents. The new highway superintendent did away with that practice. It was a good source of free wood at one time.
He must have a brother who works for an oil and propane company. Unfortunately, that's how those things work.
