I live in the river bluffs along the Illinois River in West Central Illinois. About a mile east of me, the USFWS is working w landowners to revert some of the bluffs from timber, back to prairie grass. Yeah, I know. A timber service brought in a fecon head on a track hoe and ground most of it down. They left some of the trees on loose piles. My friend Glen and I got permission to salvage the logs. A mutual friend brought his shid steer and grapple to help us out. Brandon moving logs to our makeshift landing.
My friend Glen got two loads like this moved to his house There is enough left on the landing to heat my house all winter for a year or more. Id say 95% black locust w 1 log each of silver maple, shoulder season, 1 cherry for the smell, and 1 long honey locust.
Yes there is a lot of hedge, we didnt keep any as I have three big log piles of it to work up, im cutting wood to mix in to cool it off some now.
Im very fortunate to have great friends and great neighbors. Makes me sick the amount of trees they just ground down. 14 acres in 2 years.
You left the hedge?? Your firewood hoarders card is revoked. Jk. Obviously. If you don't have a boiler, and already have plenty of hedge then its understandable. Very nice trailer btw.
I was burning a good amount of Black Locust this year. Have one of the newer hybrid stoves where you’re basically supposed to fill the box. I was toying with just putting a few splits in at a time. Something I’ve never done in the 8 years I owned it. Was working ok that way for keeping the stove from heating me out of house and home. Need a decent bed of coals of course. Is there a logical reason they want grass instead of trees? I know some states hate the invasive black locust but I also thought the greenies wanted trees to soak up the CO2? Sometimes the things they do don’t make sense.
How about all the trees they bulldoze over when the state/city etc. decide they want to put a road in or widen a road But very nice score
Real nice operation you got there. Good to be able to salvage some of that wood. Sent from my SM-S536DL using Tapatalk
Too bad they've ground so much up, but plenty there to keep hoarders happy. Good to have a friend with that skid steer to help out. Saves a lot of work for sure.
Here's a nice load of cherry I pulled off of the bluff this afternoon. I love to burn it around the holidays! I think it smells sweet and homey. It also cools off a firebox full of hedge some.
A Lil' jag O' blackimus loci off the landing as the cold front moves in this afternoon. Hedge in the foreground. Temps in the 50's beautiful time of year to cut wood.
Interesting how in one place the environmental people are cutting trees down and in another they are planting them— All in the name of what is “correct”. Seems somewhat bipolar to me. Just sayin…
The Blue Jays are gonna be mad!!! A late afternoon short load of Mulberry. This was just the main trunk. Those raucous buggers won't be dropping purple poop bombs on that area.
Wow, this is getting better and better. Osage and mulberry. Couple years you’re going to be sitting pretty!!
