Any one else do this? Sad day today i broke my 23" axe. Had a real nice edge and sunk it into a round lifted to the splitter and snapped thee handle breaking it free. Been using this one for a while now. Doesnt always bite like a fine point of a pickaroon. But i usee it to cut strings betweeen rounds on the splitter. Thinking about an x15 as my new replacement. Am i alone or does everyone have a fancy pick
Can you just put a new handle on? Just got a pickaroon, it's awful handy. Live the Fiskars line, will be adding an x15.
Yea i can but add that to the pile of projects. Ripped apart the back half of exterior on garage have to replace some rotted wood and split a ton!
New handle is fairly fast project. A pickaroon project is also quick and easy. just made this over the weekend in about 45 minutes. Just an angle grinder and drill.
I made one out of an old axe, I really like using it. Indidnt think I would use it much but it does help when pulling splits from the truck bed and also picking up bigger pieces when splitting.
The first one I made didn't work well at all and I think it was because it didn't have any weight to it. Made the second one from a pickax and it works great. Don't have to use any force to get it to grab the log, just drop it on the log from about 6" and it grabs. I use it every time I unload wood and it makes the work much easier, keeps my hands from getting smashed too.
I use a 4 tine cultivator. picked it up off a street 20+ years ago. works so well when unloading the truck I can't convince myself I need a pickaroon. plus, gots a long handle. just sayin
Sounds great for unloading. I've used a mason hoe. A good pickaroon can be used for many things besides unloading though. I'm to the point if I drive into the woods and forget mine I'll turn around and go get it. Personally I like 18-20" Load the trailer, load the splitter and even for stacking splits. My spine loves my pickaroon
I use a 4 tine cultivator also for unloading splits, it works good for that, but for rounds poles and everything else the hookaroon works much better
I've just come across an old axe head that I aim to make into a pickeroon. Can't buy them in New Zealand for love nor money. ( More fun to make too.) Will post pics of the finished product. (And the process if anyone's interested.)
Nicely done. I've been looking at different shapes. Like the one that wranglerstar made: but also like the curve of the 'ice axe' style picks that let you carry at different angles.
Thanks, yes the one he made is well done. The first one I made does not have anything going through the head and handle. This one has a bolt that is peened over on the other side.
Welcome to the forum Woodchuck Chuck. Yes, please post some pictures. Maybe there's a business opportunity for you there, Peavey has a bunch of different ones but not a Kiwi Beak. You need to come out with the Kiwi Beak model!!
Kiwi beak! Brilliant! Now I'm wondering if kiwi can be trained to move my wood for me... all that beak going to waste...
Friends, it's a disposable pen world we live in! Just went to the hardware store to price up an axe handle for the pickeroon project, and a handle, is exactly the same price as a complete axe. Now, making one from an old head, with a new handle and a couple of wedges will run me $25 more than buying a whole new axe and grinding it down. Wondering: Do axe handles in the USA advertise that they're from the USA? (Look at the price for a real culture shock!) Full axe- same price
