The Car Hoarding thread Yesterday I got them propped up, but I've got my grandson today, so cutting will happen Sunday morning.
We never use tarps to cover firewood. Leave it open to dry and get some wind and sun. The tarps just hold in moisture ...good for mushrooms. . Locals here say that the rain "pushes out the sap" .
I hear ye, thats why i cover my stacks only on top and cut only in winter time when sap is low. I do that with oak, uncovered for several month exposed to wind, rain and sunshine... but allready cut, split and more or less stacked. Those stacks on the fotos are a few years old and most of it dry anyway, so i rather keep them dry. The old owner didnt cared too much about his firewood at some point and yes he used tarps to covered it all up and i have to say i saw alot of wood that was more compost than anything else... but for little money 4 cords dry firewood plus 1 cord with the condition ranging from compost to need-some-dryin. I'd say not bad at all.
Some Forward Leaners... I had the impression my chain was dull, later on i made a testcut and it wasnt that bad.
SPALTED! another new term ive learned in a week! Thanks Bill! A lot of the beeches down in my woods have a fungi attacking them...strange blackish color on one side, part of the tree dies off and eventually it snaps in the wind. Have you seen this up your way?
You could dry it and make stabilized knifehandles out of it, really does look amazing. Like this one, even though simple colorrange, you wont find another one like it in the whole world. Foto: Steffen Meyer, from here.
Unfortunatly it ends up in my stove I love Aspen, burns bright...well nice starter isnt it?! Been asked to check this one out if its worth it to replant and make future firewood out of it.
