Stop torturing yourself man, it's not worth it. The grass is always greener as they say. :) They do typically grow in groves; I have yet to see a solitary tree somewhere. I'm still not convinced there's no Locust near you. Farmland, river banks, behind a shopping center... somewhere.

    WHERE you ask????
WARE! Locust grove, check back periodically for blow downs :)
See, on a river bank, next to a strip mall. The company that bought the land for development probably bought it years ago from a farm that went belly up. On that farm there was Locust, which still grows there. Follow the river and you'll find more Locust. It's all about reading the subtle details in the land.

I didn’t say there is no Locust around me. Just very little in my town or touching towns. The town I work in which is about 45 minutes north of me has quite a bit of Black Locust. As a matter of fact across the street from my office is a 4’ diameter specimen. I carefully look for downed trees on the sides of the road, but very seldom see any.

I drive by a solitary one in a front yard in North Haven. I always slow down to check it out of course.

I get the safety mandates but question that price. How do you think they arrived at $50? Seems arbitrary.

Tough bottom line for scroungers... if you don’t own the land, your access to wood is restricted to permission, public areas with permits, or other legal means. Don’t turn into the wood-stealing woodchucks we have around here.

It does seem rather arbitrary, and entirely unnecessary. I was talking with my wife about it while we were walking the dog and even she agrees it's pointless. If you're doing the state a favor why would you need to pay for a permit?

Almost like the craiglist ads you see wanting you to cut down their trees, have insurance. But you can have the wood!

I could have sworn there wasn’t a locust tree within 50 miles of me. Until I started looking. Hell, Brad found some one exit away from me. I never take that exit ramp. That really made me look harder. There’s a patch just down the road from me on the side of the same highway. Drove past it a million times. In my defense they just cleared that industrial lot for the first time in 20 years so now you can see.

Exactly. The wood you get in return is worth more than enough to cover labor and other costs, right?

Seems this practice just draws more attention than if they didn’t put a sign out at all. Seen plenty of signs like that over the years. Gotta have something to protect it from being stolen while it rots!  Same kinda people that will be bucking it up from the downhill side!

I agree! Way I see it, we already own it. I’m not paying the state to drive around looking for a tree that’s already down, close enough to the road that I don’t kill myself trying to get it all. They sell these same permits in Michigan. Pretty cheap. Allows permit holder to cut a certain amount per year, but again, has to be already down and cant drive anything motorized onto state land to retrieve it.

$50 for 2.5 cords doesn't sound that bad to me considering in NH, for state property (i.e., state parks), the permits for dead and down are $25.00 per cord with a two-cord maximum. For federal lands (i.e., national forest), it's a much more reasonable $10.00 per cord (also for dead and down).
