Late to the party but thats definitely pecan. Great firewood and great for the smoker. I dislike splitting it though. Way to stringy and full of knots.
I've never split any of the trunk wood, just (dry) branch wood that I smuggled in. It's usually very hard to split with a hatchet. gotta give it a good wack and it always splits clean.
Wow never would have guessed pecan. Dad brought some saplings up from Arkansas in the mid 80's and even though NJ is out of their range and it took them a long time to do much of anything they are pretty big now and bark looks nothing like that.
They have come up with some winter hardy varieties in the last several years. Mine is not. It was probably planted here in the 80's. I talked to a guy that is into grafting and we may try grafting on to a hickory tree. This guy is some kind of tree nut.
U had me baffled. This is also my favorite smoking wood. I have some friends in Indiana with a giant Pecan orchard. They bring me the limbs that fall off the trees every year to smoke with, more than I can use. Super mellow. Not sure how or when this orchard was started but these trees are massive. The piece you originally showed is the size of the limbs that fall out after wind storms.
anyone that enjoys smoking over hardwood needs to try pecan!! There is nothing better for steaks and burgers!
