    So where does that theoretically put the temp...over 1000...over 1200?
    If so then that had to have been buildup inside the pipe burning...unless the air damper was left wide open maybe.
    When you say your wood was 18%, is that checking it in the middle of a freshly split piece? Checking the outside and/or ends means nothing.
    Either that or you are choking the air down too far, making it smolder?

    I've never packed mine (That tight) but the same concept, even without a pipe/flue damper.
