We have been processing some of the oak from Our biggest logging job yet.
A couple trees had hooks and springs that we could see when we took them down. We painted the ends and objects red. 0713221648.jpg
Then we have found some with the splitter... 0705221358b.jpg 0705221418.jpg
Picked up this split from the cull pile today after the rain washed it off... 0713221624.jpg
Then we were cutting this nice log today... 0713221511.jpg
Cut 2 - 18" rounds from the butt end, no blue streak or spots, started on 3rd cut, would have been about 5-5 1/2' from the ground. Feel the saw grab something and see a few sparks... 0713221510.jpg
Gonna take a few sharpenings to fix this almost new Archer chain, dinged up a few cutters 0713221459.jpg
I put on an old chain after that, glad I did, as I nipped another screw eye... 0713221839.jpg

    Egads....
On thinking about it, I grew up with a hammock strung between 2 pines. I recall seeing those screw eyes dissappear into the bark. Same with the clothes line, but those got backed out from time to time.
Funny enough, my old man was really cautious about using aluminum nails for all his bird houses. Perhaps he dug the screw eyes out?

I found a knot of wire and staples in a tree, half used chain. Figured with it, I might as well section around the knot rather then using a new chain. Good thing I did, lost 8 teeth off the chain doing it. Even sharpened, that chain never cut well again...

Hate when that happens, but I hate it a little less now that I have a grinder.

I feel for you Jeff! Happens to the best of us. Thats enough to make a grown man cry! Ive killed a couple in the past month. Hit metal hidden in weeds (turned out to be a basketball hoop in the woods behind my friends house) and a rock. :emb:No hand filing these either. Down to one good 16" chain for the 261. Know a good source for Stihl chain cheap?

And with your square grinding too. Does the grinder do it square or you true it up then hand file?

It grinds square. You pay a good bit extra to do so.

The hidden surprises of the woods. Nothing to like about messed up chains and dealing with the metal.

    Nasty!

I hate finding that crap with my saw. But I don’t mind it with my hydro splitter. I just burn the metal out in the Oslo.

How many chains you running? Your sharpener guy must like you a lot! Make sure he puts you on his Christmas card list!

E bay is where I usually find the best deals for Stihl chains , as you know the Stihl chains are a little more than others but to me worth the extra $$.
You know that it is just a matter of time before you find metal or a rock , that's all part of the game we all play.

I have the grinders here if you need to tune them up , I don't normally grind unless they really take it on the chin. Have one here I need to do myself and a bunch of bandsaw blades as well.
Maybe we need a saw tune up/sharpening day ?

I didn't know how lucky I was when I hit that metal in that log...
This is the nail the saw hit. 0715222027.jpg That same log had a few more surprises. 0715222046.jpg
    And then...2 more...
    0715222154_HDR.jpg
Don't know what might have been on that tree, but the nails seem to be in that area where the grain is deformed. 0713221511.jpg
I'm gonna get a can and save what we find.
