I burned about 2/3 of a cord I guess, Burned up a little in September playing with the new stove. Burning much less than last year with the dragon
We've burned a lot more than last year at this time, about 2/3rds cord already. It's been the coldest temps in the last 4 years here and seems early too. Usually don't get the big freezes until Jan-Feb, but it's been in the teens for the last week and well below zero just a few hours south of here. Not much snow/precept though. Supposedly "warming" back up to the 40s this week, so I will go back to burning some shoulder stuff.
Definitely plowing thru the wood. Real winter is here early this year. Woke up to a whopping 1* this morning with a -18* wind chill. Good thing is the house was holding a nice 69* this morning when I got up on a 10 hour load. Bad thing is that is because I started burning my black locust last night. It is the only wood that kind of brings a tear to my eye to have to burn. Single digits and below is the only time it goes in the stove.
I'm watching 1/4 cord racks going empty at an astonishing rate. When it was just me a rack would last almost a month. I installed a wood stove at my mom's and my sister moved in just down the street with a 3 cu ft stove and my stash is supplying all three stoves. I've gone from 'ten-years-ahead-you-have-far-too-much-wood-it's-going-to-rot-before-you-use-it-all ' to now looking for dead standing oak nearby for (maybe even ) next year. Especially if it stays cold like this. I'll recognize a gnarly split I fought hand splitting in 1998, just don't ask me where I put the tape rule 20 minutes ago.
With the way this weather is going, I may end up bringing up a little more Oak from the field as well. I need to do it ASAP though.....we're getting snow almost every day. I could always just take the Jeep back there.
Brought up about a 1/4 "face" cord of Oak a couple days ago and it's all but gone already. This weather is killing me.
I have burned more than usual this year because it seems colder than usual. I realized recently that I don't have enough seasoned wood for next winter, so I have been cutting Red Maple and Black Cherry and trying to get them stacked immediately. By New Years Day I'll have a couple of cords of maple and cherry seasoning for next winter, so I won't have to use the oak I stacked this summer. I can save the oak another year in hopes it will be well seasoned by fall of 2015.
Really Burners.....Complainant? That why we got this forum up and running. I don't see issues, just because it cold early. I hoard WOOD. So many hoard wood, much more than me. I'll handle 2014. Then add to the stacks. For more cold days.
