And this is the first time it was in danger of a fire?????


This is a blatant ploy for public relations.

 

Giant Sequoia trunks are fire resistant and helps open the cones so the seeds can germinate. True, fire resistant isn't the same as fire proof, but I'm with yooperdave on this, especially in light of the governments own park history books (link is only to, Section 5 of Richard J. Hartesveldt's book ).
