I took the little echo up the hill and started working on the big oak blow down. I had to be careful because I was working on a slope covered in leaves and leaves on wood is slippery. I spent some time policing the area first. I did not get as much done as I would like but I did work slow. I only started this afternoon; I was suppose to be working on a site but the server went down on me; this is one of those shared hosting accounts. Therefore, I decided to grab the saw and go and work on the blown down. One section is hung up in a tree so that will be interesting; might have to leave part of it.

As mentioned above be careful. That looks like a steep little hill. Kinda looks like you might have some stuff thats got tension on it.

While you can not tell, the part of the downed tree in the fork of the tree is way over my head. I am going to have to go up the hill and I guess cut, and under cut and let it drop until I can't any more. Which means leaving what can't be done. If there is advice on handling this, please share.

Yes, it is. I have tulips blooming, and daffodils have been blooming for a couple of weeks now. The blueberry bushes are blooming, the pear and peach trees. It is the first of March; the average last frost is April 15 so this is way too early for stuff. I expect a hard freeze to come and even snow.

As for the height of the snag, let's say for grins and giggles 12' up from the ground, estimate that back from the snag (and if it's at a safe height then) perform the safe cut and when the snag drops, the section of oak that's still left in the tree will drop to almost vertical. You may be able to man woman handle that freed up section out of the snagging oak to the ground.... and then proceed to recovering your farwood.
Just like eatin' lettuce and kissing yer sister...... there's nothing to it.

I just checked the forecast; we could see snow Sunday and Monday. I am not going to worry about it. I may try to protect the lilies that are up but the rest I may just leave. For the last several years I have gone though this; things growing and then a freeze and me grabbing all the sheets and blankets I can to cover my flowers; and I have a lot of flowers to cover. Last year twice; I had my friend here to help and even then it took a couple of hours to get things covered.

The standard advice is: "Be safe. Don't cut anything that you aren't 100% confident about. " Let your conscience be your guide. ONLY YOU have to live with your decisions.

My back is hurting, I guess from the way I had to stand on the hill while cutting. Hopefully some over the counter pain relief will help and I will be good to go; would like to get some more of it done tomorrow.

There is some good free wood there Kimberly, glad to see you're getting it. You are doing it right, go slow and evaluate your next move. Like others have said, your safety is paramount.

Yep. I work until I start feeling a few aches, and that's it for the day. Nice looking deadfalls.

At the moment we are getting high gusts of winds; maybe this evening if the winds die down.
