I didn't cut the amount of firewood in the spring I usually do but the firewood I did get was better btu's.
We did get some rain. Not sure how much; will look at gauge when it gets daylight. Some lightning. One gust of wind. Days sure are shorter. 6:00 and still can't see outside.
I decided to go after some down or dead American Hophornbeam (Ironwood) today, my first load was a small load from one that was down on the westside of our property. When Backwoods Savage was here we drove by it, it's just off the main trail in that area. Picture 2144 is another dead standing Ironwood in the same area that I'll get pretty soon.
My second load of Ironwood came from up top, one top that was left from the spring gave us more rounds while the pine sat in the tree and watched. I found more Ironwood that was down not far from the top which filled up the tub, I'll split some of the bigger rounds and get it stacked before the end of next week. We should have another face cord from everything back near the sandpit, we have more rounds of Beech, Maple, Ash and Ironwood.
I stacked another face cord today, most of it is Ironwood with some Maple splits and rounds to finish it off. I also finished off a face cord nearby which gives us 57 face cord going into the fall felling. We have room for another 8 to 10 face cord if needed. Since EAB is in our county, I'll fell more Ash.
Depending on the weather, I'll either be digging up some smaller Yellow Birch stumps which are to the left in picture 2166 or I'll be back in getting more Ironwood in picture 2144. Picture 1485 is just a White Pine stump I dug up before we had the garage built, the digging I'll be doing will have more rocks and less sand near the hill in the back.
I got my Sugar Maple split & stacked now just need to find some more or some Black Maple to finish out the pallet space :
I also got the old Hedge post cut up & mostly stacked. I have about a Gator load to pick up & stack tomorrow fortunately, I had a nice spot to open to stack it in :
I think my last post we had 56 face cord up, I've been getting more damaged Ironwood so we have 57 face cord stacked and tomorrow I'll bring home another load of damaged Ironwood that should give us 58.
I felled another Ironwood today that had lost the other side a few years ago so the base was getting rotten. I had a dead small Beech that I felled but when it hit the ground, it broke up because it was rotten inside so I left it up there. The small rounds (Ash ?) came from a tree that was across the trail so I bucked it up and brought it home. Picture 2214 is all the Ironwood that I've been getting lately, hopefully we have another face cord.
They never get real big, the circumference on the one today was 31.41592653589793. That's a pretty good size tree for that area but I've had bigger Ironwood. Once I get this stacked, I'll have 58 face cord up for our personal use with room for 8 more face cord which I plan on getting this fall once the leaves come off the trees.
buZZsaw BRAD , I was looking for some Ash when I was done cutting today and came across this but when I looked up, the first thing that I could see was Basswood leaves. I stepped around the corner and sure as chit there was a Basswood. Picture 2209 is the Ash (on the left) with the Basswood, 2211 is the Ash and 2212 is the smaller Basswod.
I spent the day getting rid of some wind damaged pine and a small maple (1st pic) and started grounding some smaller dead standing pine along with stuff that was already down, I took a total of 12 loads over to the outside fireplace. It started snowing the last hour I was out working which was nice.
I probably should burn more pine. I tend to just knock a lot of the smaller ones down so they contact the ground and rot faster.
It's always nice burning in the winter, there's always some nice heat coming off the fire if you need it. Hopefully the next warmup with rain clears the hill in the back of snow and ice so I can fell more ash.
I've been working but just took a break from here. I put up better btu's in our wood inventory late summer and fall, more beech , ironwood, sugar maple and some ash. How's everything been going for you and your family? Are you still putting up firewood or just selling at this time of year?
