I hadn't been back in on the trails since the windstorm we had so today was spent clearing branches off the trails and a dead hemlock. After that was done I started up on the maple again, I hadn't used the Stihl 390 in almost a year so I used that today with a 20 inch bar. All the rounds cut today are down the hill with the other rounds. I usually would limb it up and buck it up from the top down but certain parts of the top were up higher then I like to cut so I cut it back further. It worked out pretty good, the weight of the top kept the area I was cutting off the ground.
I had just sharpened the chain on the grinder, instead of 30 degree angle mine are 35. I've seen the square type you're talking about but I'll stay with what I'm using. T.Jeff Veal , I haven't been getting the ash on the ground like I had planned but I still have another week or so. I just put the plow back on the tractor, I think east of us will get more snow but I like having it on if mother nature dumps on us. With what we have stacked and in rounds, we should have 54 or 55 face cord for our personal use along with 8 face cord of white pine for the shoulder season. If I get more ash down in the next two weeks, hopefully that will give us another 2 face cord.
yooperdave , is it dry enough in your area that you can get out and cut some firewood? I had plans of felling four or five ash today but I only did one and then bucked up most of the tree. Hopefully I can get two or three ash down tomorrow.
These are the two Ash I felled, the first picture was from yesterday and the second is from today. Most of both trees are bucked up and down the hill, I'll have some cleanup that I'll need to do before I can buck up the rest.
It sure makes it easier when splitting it. I'm hoping with the Ash that I c/s earlier this spring along with these trees, we'll get two face cord out of it.
I come in from the topside off a main trail in that area, it's a good walk down to the maple because of some big dead trees that are down but it's pretty much flat on the side I cut from. My plan changed this morning, I did a bunch of raking and dumped the dead grass in the woods on the house property.
I can't believe that there was a day Last fall mother nature was nice, when we had the two windstorms in late November and early December, most everything that came down isn't on a hill. Even though raking isn't my favorite job, it felt nice working around the house on something that wasn't firewood related.
I finished the first row in the third picture and then started on the middle row of pine, I'll finish off the middle row and then get going on s/s some hardwood. Eight face cord of the twelve that I'll have stacked will be ready for this fall and some for the spring of 2023.
Not yet. Snow really took a beating this past week! Shouldn't be too much longer to get out for wood.
Even though our mornings have been from 26 to 27, the days are getting warmer which is nice. It's pretty dry out in the woods so some rain would be nice. I think I'll finish the uprooted maple and call it a spring, I didn't meet my target of 10 - 12 face cord on the ground but we still should have 53 to 55 face cord in inventory once I get it stacked.
I finished up the stack of white pine and then started a face cord stack of maple, ironwood and some beech, I'll finish this stack either tomorrow or Sunday.
