Welcome to FHC. You'll like it here. We have a bunch of knowledgeable folks who are willing to share. We like beer, dogs and pics. Beautiful work.
That chunk of spaulded maple found its way back to Ohio yesterday in a box that was labeled from secret Santa. After opening we found a nice note from Tim and Julie. What a beautiful bowl , we will cherish it. Thanks again Tim
I had to emulate my bro TurboDiesel and got myself a small Rikon 70-105 lathe off Marketplace. I’ve been learning the basics with our bro in law WoodTurnerinPA this fall. I was doing pens, kitchen utensils etc with him. A neighbor cleared a fence row summer 2020 and left several 4 foot sections of 14”-16” red cedar trunks along the road so I asked if I could have them and brought them home to season. Stuff smells great turning on a lathe. Also we had a small dogwood tree blow down this summer so I’m turning that too. I’m mostly just learning how to do Christmas stuff and practicing right now.
A good friend is an avid cigar smoker. He recently saw a baby rattle I turned for a mutual friend’s relative, so he asked if I could make him two cigar ashtrays. This isn’t something I’ve ever done, and I only ever once attempted a bowl, but I said I’d be happy to try at least. I had two 6”x6”x3” maple bowl blanks so I taped them together and drilled four 1 1/2” holes for the cigar rests on each blank. I had an idea to make the base of the ashtrays bowl shaped but leave the tops square. I’ve seen bowls turned this way and thought it would be a good design for the ashtray. I picked up some 3” round stones from Amazon to line the bottoms of the ashtrays. Tonight I turned the first one. I put “Expresso” colored stain on the cigar rests and inside the bowl and I’ll finish the rest of the maple tomorrow with clear finish. The stone liner is not glued in place. I wanted it to be removable for cleaning the ashtray
Thanks! The second coat of dark stain finally dried enough to handle it so I just put a coat of Walnut oil on it and the maple wood colors turned out really nice.
Thanks. Now I’m getting more requests for ashtrays than anything else. (Of course I can still count the number of requests on two hands…) A friend just requested a regular (cigarette) ashtray so I went back to the small dogwood trunk out by the firewood pile, cut a ring and turned that. I lined the bowl on this one with a 3” round stone also. The central pith is under the round stone and this ashtray will be outside on a deck, so I’m not too concerned about trying to prevent cracks.
