Yes I have a block of birch that spalted too. But most of the birch I've been too late for goes punky so fast so I'm usually on it when i find it. If I can help split it in half first then work on it later I will. In this sort of way it's a lot like cottonwood. Split that in half and then wait a little bit. Water retention on this wood is incredible.
Found this chunk of maple at Walts gtg. Its about 16x16x 7" (7 on the wide side and about 4-5 on the other side) Had some curly grain and looked like some spalting.
It was a bit of an odd shape so i took my time and laid out what i thought was the best part and then trimmed it up best i could with the (battery) chainsaw. I chucked it up and had to do more trimming till it would turn on the lathe. I was doing my best to keep it as big as possible so it took a while to knock all the high spots down. I think it turned out ok. It is probably my best yet. I hate to give it away...lol Its not quite finished yet. Gotta finish the bottom and give it a few more coats of finish
That is really quite inspirational. Beauty piece. Do you have pics of working on the lathe? Any good website links for a guy to research this?
