Cut fresh, its like turning a watermelon, literally!
after sitting in the basement for a few months it had some very small checks in one end but turned nice and finished pretty smooth:yes:

it looked really neat with the bark on. Thats why I originally grabbed it, thinking I'd make a bird feeder or bird house and leave the bark on.

    Nice grain in that.

How did you hollow it out?

I've got to admit, I really like the sycamore. It has a nice grain and its easy to turn. Looks a lot like maple:yes:

Finally finished the live edge maple bowl we started at the club meeting last month.
    This was a challenge for sure. 20190420_153803.jpg 20190420_153814.jpg 20190420_153834.jpg 20190420_154216.jpg

TurboDiesel, if you want to use the flower pots for real flowers and water them, buy some glass test tubes, drill appropriate size hole and after turning and finishing, insert glass test tube and then you can safely water them and not ruin the wood pot.

Have always been told, for live edge items the wood needs to be harvested in the winter when bark is tight against the tree, in the rest of the year the bark will come loose easily.

I will try to post some pictures of my students current assignment of a bowl from a board.

The guy at the club meeting that was showing us how to make the live edge bowls brought the blanks. there was no bark on it. it was years old and very dry. got a few chips out of the edge while we were cutting the wings. i just sanded the chips out and burned the edges.

    Thanks for the tips!:salute:

It's mothers day...time to make a little something for mom.
Went to the local flower shop and selected a Gerbera Daisy in a 5" round pot.
I carefully removed the flower from the thin plastic pot to size the planter. Turned out nice but had a lot of catches while hollowing the bottom. (probably because of the knot right in the corner)

The daisy didn't like being out of its pot for a couple hours but perked right up when i gave it a little water.
I wrapped the plastic pot in platic wrap to keep the water away from the wood.
    Used sycamore wood.

Glad you wrapped in plastic, was wondering how it would hold up. Wonderful project/gift. I don't do enough of them for the family. You are an inspiration.
