Charley, that's awesome, looks great. I'm excited to see what you think of the PH. Go easy on the fuel, she is a beast heat wise!

Is that brown or Black, hard to tell from the pics/display.

Can't wait to fire up the new Union/Steal Hybrid when it arrives later this month. With a 3.2 cu ft firebox it should throw a bit of heat. And burn three months on a shoe box of balsa sticks.

It's actually Charcoal... Yes I'll go easy on the fuel... Actually looking forward to that.. loved hearing that there was no need to fill her up with wood.. you got plenty of heat from a half full box.. Well just from moving the weight around I can imagine she's a long steady heater.. Can't wait to put 3 pieces of wood in like I did the Fireview and compare apples to apples.. That will be very interesting to see the difference..

Well, doing my first break in fire... Stove went together great! Ash pan mechanism even uses a ball roller bearing .. All the holes to bolt everything up lined up perfect.. What a great job Woodstock did.. Even the Ash lip bolts on with two bolts and I couldn't believe how close they kept the tolerances where it meets the front corners on the stove.. Amazing. Start up went great, 55 degrees out and zero draft problem, lit the paper and kindling shut the door and 15 minutes later I closed the draft about half way as to let things heat up slowly... flue temps got to 300, stove cast iron by the pipe got to about 180.. I let her sit for a few hours and then do another fire.. Maybe even a total of 3 to break her in... Just like the Fireview,, I figure the stove will give years of heat, why rush breaking it in... I looked inside and notice they even have a cast iron embossed Progress Hybrid insignia..

Nice! Charley, wasn't that a "used" stove you bought? Or am I thinking of somebody else....? It looks brand new.

No, mine is brand new... You might be thinking of the guy Old Hippie who bought my Fireview when I returned it... Woodstock went over the stove and he bought used from them.. He got a good stove as I never over fired it and broke it in easily.. Even Jamie looked at the stove when I brought it back and said they it wouldn't need much cleaning up at all.. Bit maybe your are thinking of my Fireview being resold ?

Your stove looks awesome. Beautiful stove room, very inviting. That badboy will keep y'all plenty warm. As im sure you already know (I learned the hard way) those candles up there "may" melt.

Thanks for the compliments.... Oh those aren't real candles, they run on batteries.. something the wife bought some years back.. I can imagine real candles would be pretty sad looking in a hurry..

Got her up to 300 and engaged the cat... 3 regular splits... Wow she's a power house! Had the draft shut down all the way and just , just moved the handle a hair open,,, stove cruised at 500 like nothing! Windows are all open in the house to let the curing smells out,, 68 out, 75 in the house! Still have a very good draft for starting... No smoke out the door issues.. Benny found the heat... Even though my side walls are not in line with the sides of the stove, I'm an inch shy of the 24 inch requirement... But not in line with the sides of the stove... Shot the wall up towards the stove, highest I found with the stove at 500 was 106 with the IR gun... Woodstock mentioned 117 as a max safe temp... So I'm going to get some metal bent to put against the side wall and just have an inch bend come around the front to hide my stand off spacers... Then you can't look down the wall from the front and see the spacers... Want to keep a clean look yet be safe..

Right where I want to be.
Curious how long it'll hold that temp.

Didn't really keep track, it's just under 300 about 5 hours later. Was very dry ash, almost too dry, like getting punky... I see where people said to watch loading it full until you get use to the stove... Apparently I have a really good draft... I'm betting I can almost run the stove with the air damper closed.. With a good bed of coals and a fresh load she should burn a long time...being able to close the draft so much, yet she throws lots of heat,,, I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.. Should be interesting...

Nice charley, your all set now for some cold weather. Loading it full, you don't have to worry about overfireing, you just have to have a need for all that heat, cause there will be lots of it, for a l-o-n-g time!

I'm surprised they gave you the 117 number for the side wall? Perhaps because it is wood? My side wall gets a way hotter than that and they had no problem with it. But my walls are tiles/stone, with dura rock behind it, so I guess that would make a difference.

Yes because it's wood... In fact tonight I shot 125 temps... Just going to hang some black metal shields on the wall sides with 1 inch spacers and have the lip come around the front like an inch or so.. Just so you can't look in from the front and see the spacers.. My standing seam roof guy has black metal , he said he'll bend me what I need.. Wood wall is not lined up with the side of the stove, but just towards the back stones where they angle..but enough that it get's warm,,, just easier to not take a chance... Had a good load in the stove tonight.. I notice I got all secondaries with the draft completely closed.. Stove got to 550.. Funny with the draft closed I can here the intake making a faint whistle noise as the stove drafts with each burst of flames. open it a hair and it goes away. Must be acting like a reed when the draft is closed all the way .. what a difference from the Fireview heat wise.. Scarey heat but I know I can use it or just put it less wood... Had the windows open all day with the stove running, trying to get the new smell gone..

Where are you measuring 550? Top back metal around the collar?

My back corners are only 13" from the side walls, the door side gets pretty hot. The door side only has 1 layer of soap(the door itself), where the other side has the inside soap, and the outside layer of soap, so it doesn't give off quite as much heat I think.

By the way, the smoke smells are all gone for me! At least on 2 fires so far. Stoked!

Machria, didn't you have yours up and running last year? I thought you were burning last year?

Or did it take a year for the break in fires to die out? ...it could happen! LOL
