    I don't know what you want with the PH but with my straight cat I split medium (6") and medium-small(4".) No secondaries, so I can cut the air to control the burn rate, don't need big splits like a non-cat.
    I usually mix the BL with some other wood like Oak or Cherry. I'll put those in the back and bottom and put the BL on top, so the BL coals have more time to burn down by the time the load is done.

    Pretty much what the Savage says. My Progress coals some depending on type of wood. I rake the coals to the front and give it air. Sometimes with the cat engaged and sometimes not.

    The 3 year plan has many purposes and yes, drying the wood is #1 but there are many more benefits to the plan.
