True dat. But, I am way over my average annual consumption. Normally I'm 6 cords into an 8-cord pile by now. Heating that garage before I completed the insulation, was a mistake.
About 2 1/2 cords of silver maple and a couple of wheelbarrows worth of hickory. So far. Probably another cord to finish the winter off.
I am at about 3.5 cords thud far. Only have 1/4 cord of good stuff left. Rest of the season shoulder wood and uglys. Need March to be mild. We heat pretty 100% with the wood. Retired and we are home all the time. 24/7 burn.
We've used up what I earmarked for this year. last year we had cold spells all the way into May. So in a way we are now burning next year's wood. On the lookout for some dead standing that might be good for next year. These have been up for over a week. The concrete wall absorbs the higher Spring sun and warms the soil up right there. 50ºF by the soil thermometer stuck in the soil for no longer than ten seconds. You could probably plant peas.
I've burned about 2.5 cords, red oak, red maple, and shoulder season wood. I moved about a cord of red oak into the basement last fall and have been pulling from that. The larger bay of my woodshed is still mostly full: and I'd like to empty it by spring.
If you know your going to run out remember it's always pallet season! Usually my end of shoulder season wood is the stack of pallets we tossed behind the shop all winter.
About 1.5 cord of tulip and other punkish woods from a scrounge. Didn’t run the stove for about a month and half.
I had 3 cord in the l/h shed bay, plus another 1/3 on the right at the start of this season. Down to about 1.5 on the l/h so far (nothing used from the other side), plus whatever nat. gas we've burned. Looking at the past 3 gas billings, we've used an equivalent of about another cord, so let's say 2.5 cord so far if we were burning only wood. Quite a bit of that gas use is for the pole building, so we're doing real well on cost/use so far. The "plan" was to use 1/2 wood, 1/2 nat gas this winter, and wood alone should have been about 2.5 cord. I think we're on track. I've used almost all firewood this month in the house. Once I can start using some of the "free" firewood (next winter), the cost will be lower, although use may be a bit higher as the BTU content is less in that stuff. Here I was, thinking I had all this down to a science, then we went and put in a furnace. I'm gonna' Kaizen the heck outta' this process......again.
Well, I'm close... If you drive as far south as you can go in New Jersey, fall into the water, back up 1/2 mile and that's where I'm at! But its still "New Jersey"
About 2 1/2 cord burnt, and about 2 feet of snow on the ground. It seems winter held out until February this year!
Yours looks like mine does! I was keeping the stove going and opening up windows just to burn stuff. It's been really mild here this year! Our Koi pond hasn't even froze yet. Last year I had a heater in there for them to get O2 if needed.
