hi guys !! sorry i never got back to any posts, for some reason my Email never notified me, But yes i do buy a lot of stuff at TSC, love the place !! Hey i got a question, prob an easy question and i think i know the answer... OK guys, when im burning my Wood stove, i have a temp gauge on the top of the fire box, and ok if i put it on the pipe the temp drops very fast that you can actually see it falling. Ok SOOO.. ive read that Creosote will light up at 650 degrees.. so i never let my stove go over about 500, usually in the 400-450 range.. OK so im asking .. the temp in the firebox will be higher than the pipe temp? And so when the stove hits 550- the pipe is say 400 -450 according to the temp gauge if i move it to the pipe. (single wall pipe) SO ive been freaking out for no reason when the temp is hitting 550 or so.... ALSO, i was looking at a device called a FLUE ALERT, there about 30 bucks and has a fire alarm on it if the flue gets to hot , im considering it for a piece of mind considering i am busy alot and cant always watch the fire temps. What yall think about the device and the please chime in about the pipe vs firebox temps.. also i got my stove burning great, i guess i was using to large of logs in the firebox, ive since been splitting one log in to 3 sections vs 2 and they have been burning great with no problems. Also i put it to the test yesterday night and tossed in a larger log and all the problems started right back. started a fire with smaller logs today and been going with no problems. I guess with the small fire box the larger logs just don't work. Yalls prob saying WELL DAAA... lol but overall, i grew up around wood burning but as an owner and with me actually being the one keeping the fire going , i am new to it but learning. Please feel free to toss out your input to me and let me know. thanks again everyone !!

BTW- im going to get another temp gauge ( on for the pipe and one for the firebox)

Yes!!! And possibly lower if it is gooey! If, you are exceeding 600º "anywhere" you are to hot in a conventional wood stove. Once you get your stove running correctly and dialed in, you should be within 100º of pipe vs stove temp, Your stove will be cooler starting out and pipe hotter, once running for a while that will switch. Idealy you want both at about 400º-450º. Now, some will agree and some may not but this is experience speaking but brief moments over 550º will not hurt anything but don't let it stay there. Close your draft knobs and let it perk down for a while. Here is what I use, yes that is a Weber gas grill thermometer in the pipe! DSCN2808.JPG DSCN2807.JPG

i just took the pipe out the window that really isnt used much, then cut a piece of plywood and made a 4.2 inch hole (slightly bigger than pipe) in it and took it out the window and sealed it all up with high temp tape so the pipe has airspace and isnt touching the wood. the pipe gos up3ft then has a 45 degree and a 12 inch straight pipe to another 45 where it gos straight up for about 5 ft. it really was about the only way to do the pipe with out cutting the roof.

Oh, and the "best" way to tell if your to hot without a pipe thermometer is while it is burning at night, shut off all the lights till it's dark and look for a dull glow, o_O If you don't then your fine!
Also the simplified way to tell is use the "back of your hand" and place it to within an inch of the pipe above the top of the stove, if you can hold it there for more than 5 seconds your under 500º, longer means cooler obviously. :)
