I have had a huskee since 2007 and it has worked well. I would say be patient the end of season sales should start soon. I got $200 off mine since it was a TSC return, looked brand new runs fine to this day.
Another vote for the Huskee 22 ton. Only thing that ever stopped it was some 30" twisted hedge. Has been very reliable and the price is hard to beat.
I shopped around for a splitter last year, and looked at ALL of them from expensive to cheap, and mostly in person. The DHT was one of the last ones on my short list. However I was never able to see one in person since it was a new brand at the time and nobody around here sold it. Well, it has since showed up at a local Home CRAPO store, and I had a very close look at it. My opinion is the DHT is VERY well made. It's a tank! It's heavy, welded strong, built well, and for the most part designed very well. There is one fairly big problem I see with it though, and that is ergonomics. It is very difficult to stand along side the beam and work on rounds and operate the handle easily. It is not very comfortable to work with if you stand next to it. The axel and tire are dead smack in the way when in horizontal. Others may be ok with that, but I would not be. Having said that, I will also say that most of the H/V splitters I looked at, had similar problems, some worse than others. The Ariens 22 splitter I ended up with, is the one of the few I found that did not have that problem. But that was not the only reason I selected it, my main reason was it's size or lack of size. The Ariens 22 is the smallest unit I could find (small in terms of the footprint it takes up when stored). Storage space is a premium for me. The Ariens is not the strongest build unit by any stretch, as does not have a full length beam, but it is well designed and comes with log cradles and has a $60 add on work table option. The hydraulic control can be operated from either side and there is tons of workspace without the axel and tires in the way. It runs great, and starts right up cold. I think HD was selling it for $899 last year, and I used a 20% harbor freight coupon and got it for 7 and change. I just looked at that unit this week as I was in a Harbor freight store. to be honest, I have to say that thing looked like absolute Chinese crap, sorry. Decent price, and I'm sure it will work, but.... it aint going to last very long. The moral of my long story is, I would look at them in person and choose one that has features you like. Comfort while using it is important if you ask me. Go touch and feel them, don't just look online. Lastly, don't wait to long, once you get one, you will wish you bought it long ago! Good luck
LOL! hmmmmm, I think my neighbors think I'm nuts enough already, I don't need a 22 ton log splitter dangling from the side of the house!
How did you use a Harbor freight coupon at Home Depot? Im curious because HF doesn't accept 20% off on any predator equipment? Is that a store competitor thing?
My vote for the Husky 22 too. Had no problems with mine over the years and will split all I want it to. Wait till they go on sale for $900 like they do at TSC. Make sure you check the final assembly when getting it home since that is often a lack of caring buy an employee who put it together at the store. Just sayin. As every one knows on here, Speeco makes the Husky splitter. But do some digging. The DHT splitters Co. is based in CO. So is Speeco. If you were to paint all 3 splitters the same color and put them side by side you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between none of them.
I bought the dirty hand tools 22 ton from Lowes recently. It cycles a bit faster than some of the other similar models and I have found it to be powerful enough. $999 and if you hop on ebay you can buy a 10% off coupon for a couple of bucks. For $900 you can't go wrong IMHO.
Yes, that has me perplexed as well. If you can use a HF coupon at HD for an ariens, that's a good deal. I will say I've only used 1 splitter that was made in the last 40 years. That one is my parents, forget what brand it is, but it's like 6yrs old now, bought at menards horizontal/ vertical. Works great. The other one I've used is a friends, and it's ancient, it's horizontal only and very low. But there's a way to operate it that isn't uncomfortable. I think all splitters have pros and cons. I'm not so worried about construction, as if something breaks, I have a hobart welder and I don't mind fixing stuff. Obviously if it's so junky that it can't make a season without a catastrophic failure, that is an issue. I suppose you need to see how much use the machine will get a year. Things that might be a minor annoyance for a 2 cord a yr burner might be looney bin maddening for someone burning/ processing 20 cords.
Well crud! Called every Home Depot, lowes and Menards in 50 miles and they all but laughed at me for asking about the 20% off HF match. " Those are massed produced if we matched those we would not make money because everybody would bring them in" Not a ringing endorsement! However HD and lowes will match each other!
I've got a Dirty Hands Tools 22 ton splitter. I love it. It has a Kholer motor that's super reliable and easy to start.
I have a quick question? Maintenance ? also renting versus buying. Still trying to convince wife I need a splitter.
Maintenance is real easy if u have ever changed oil in a lawn mower u can maintain a wood splitter it's cheaper to buy in the long run.
