I have an MTD 27 ton splitter. I bought it from a buddy last spring. I'd like to keep up on the maintenance on it as I need it to last a long time. I changed the engine oil in it yesterday. Easy enough. But what about the hydraulics? I know nothing about hydraulics.

Depending on how old ,and how much time is on the machine , it might be time to change the fluid and filter . It probably holds about 5 gallons of aw32 hydraulic fluid and has a 10 micron hydraulic filter . So cost and time to change it will be minimal . And, you will have a good baseline as far as servicing your machine .

    Pretty sure the MTD # is 723 0405 .

Change the hydraulic fluid in your log splitter about as often as you change the hydraulic fluid in your cars transmission unless it looks milky.

As far as I can tell there is no dipstick or drain plug for the hydraulic fluid?

Check the breather hole in that cap , to be sure it's clear , blow through it or poke some wire through

Is it possible to just change the filter and not lose all your hydraulic fluid?

    Yes.

Our MTD splitter is somewhere around 30 years old and we have not changed the fluid yet. Probably should and I have bought enough fluid to change it out. Changing the filter is super easy and you won't lose oil.

We have one of those pumps that can be used on gas or oil and I plan on sucking the oil out with that. I think those things cost around $10 in Menards.

Are hydraulic oil filters all the same? Do they all fit the same?
