Have fun today. Those work really well too...I was gonna use those on the ends, but they were out of stock.
We had fun all right. Had to correct some twisted 4x4 beams, then account for some slightly off squareness. But this is what we got done today. Having my buddy over really helped, there was a lot of thinking needed as this isn't from set plans. The second and third bay should go even smoother, but I've got a lot of odds and ends to take care of before that happens.
I always preferred the diamond style hurricane ties as well. They grab both sides of the rafter. They also make special truss screws that you can drive at an angle through the two top plates into the underside of the rafter, which negate the need for a tie.
Thats going to be great. Roof looks like plenty of pitch also. Like to do something like this one day.
Uh yeah. While the tiered roof will be awesome looking, it sure makes it a crap-ton more complicated. I'd probably have the entire roof on by now if it were a solid single roof. It's going to be awesome once it's finished though.
I ripped down 3 of the 4 12' long 2x12's to make 2 beams each. Those are at the front and back of the bays at top, holding the roof joists up. I have 1 more to rip lengthwise, then I'll need to buy 1 more 2x6x12'. I'll need a couple more 12' long 2x4's and a couple more 10' 2x6's. Along with more of the hurricane tie nails, framing nails and 2-3/4" deck screws. The list is small, and it's awesome seeing this finally coming into fruition.
Yes, I'm saving receipts. I know I saved a ton by hauling every bit of lumber I could from the cottage up north that was leftover back to my house to use on the shed. Lumber prices are up compared to pre pandemic pricing. That said, having 3 years or so of dry wood as well as a roof over my garden tractor in summer is pretty much priceless. It also acts as a fence and lot divider since the power line crew shredded every tree down a couple years ago. The shed should also act as a sound deadener to reduce the sound of the neighbors screaming kids.
Well worth it for sure. I admit the screaming kids would drive me nuts. Enjoying your build and good work.
Got the 4 intermediate floor supports on the right bay, also boxed in the right bay 4x4 uprights, screwed all the deck boards on the right bay down, and put in more framing nails on the roof beams for the center and left bays. Next I need to level the far right two 4x4 uprights and brace them, then rip the 2x12 into 2 2x6's so I can mount those up for the roof beams on the right bay. I used up all my framing nails and 2.75" screws so I'll need more of both, along with 3) 2x4x12' and a couple 2x6's for the roof joists. It's coming along nicely. Then the steel roofing can go up. After that, corner bracing at the tops, and the boards for the sides can go up as well as the two dividing walls between the side and center bays.
I am so jealous of you lawn! Our pup would love to play on that and pooping on that would be a luxery.
Lol. It needs a mow. Maybe tomorrow early evening? My wife and I kicked the soccer ball back and forth a few times for Hayden. He loves chasing it. Here's starting to trap it and bonk it around too. Badger just watched today.
Looking good brother, making nice progress. A small suggestion...if you can get those braces on, it will make it more stable putting the roof on. Walls, even better
