Tree is in MD It appeared to be standing dead. The bark is a bit deceiving. I think some of the distinguishing features weathered/flaked off?
I'm saving the pic of the trunk until tomorrow. It still has some of the tell-tale signs on the bark. You guys will get it then... Unless someone gets it tonight.
I'm going back to maple then. Just tossed a little of that on - almost forgot how I love that smell....
Next clue: If you look closely at the bark in these pics you can see some of the "fish scale" bark that hasn't worn off yet.
You certain you know what it is? I really really think it's beech. You looking for a specific variety? European (common) beech?
Bark is deceiving because it is dead and weathered. Give me ten min and I'll post a pic of a healthy one in my yard.
Pear or apple are my 2 guesses in that order. If I only looked at the first pic, I too would have said beech.
