Was at FIL's house..... he was wondering. He thought I'd was black locust, I said there is no way it's black locus for 2 simple reasons... lacking the gnarly bark and it would be split in my back yard if it was. He said it was tough to saw through.
American elm looks like that. The leaf is asymmetrical right at the stem. Unfortunately that is where your hand is.
That was the only thing that didn't look right to me; The full leaves I can see, bases appear to have equal sides...everything else looks right.
Some of the leaves farther from the camera look asymmetrical the way American Elm leaves should. Maybe the symmetrical leaves in the center of the photo are anomalies. I say it is American Elm.
I'm pretty sure that's a slippery elm. Did the leaves feel kinda furry/fuzzy instead of smooth/glossy?
