    It is sycamore then. Beech would split rather easily (unless knotty of course)

    I say Sycamore too, that bark is definitely it. Sycamore bark is very flaky and has a ‘camouflage look to it. Like others have said it is usually very stringy, almost like sweet gum. We have lots of Beech mostly Bluebeech(muscle wood) here and it’s different.
