It was tough to split i had to split away at the edges till i worked my way in

 

It is sycamore then. Beech would split rather easily (unless knotty of course)

Did you buy that splitting apparatus last Winter? Someone had posted pics of one like that. Was it you?

 

I say Sycamore too, that bark is definitely it. Sycamore bark is very flaky and has a ‘camouflage look to it. Like others have said it is usually very stringy, almost like sweet gum. We have lots of Beech mostly Bluebeech(muscle wood) here and it’s different.
