Appreciate all the feedback - appears to indeed be Hackberry. Ended up with some Cherry and Poplar as well!
Hackberry = Sugarberry Different names for the same tree. Other common names: hackberry, sugarberry, false elm, nettletree, beaverwood… Celtis occidentalis Common Hackberry - Celtis Occidentalis | Deciduous Trees | Cold Stream Farm Home | TreeBrowser 21.2 BTUs Wood Heating | Forestry
Two different species same genus. It’s why there are scientific names. Sugarberry is Celtis laevigata Common Hackberry is Celtis occidentalis
Hackberry is everywhere around here. I don't know what we have more of; hackberry, elm, or sweet gum. Have a lot of pin oak (and other oaks) too.
Yes, true, but most people don’t look up trees by their scientific names and refer to them accordingly. We don’t have hackberry where I live so I was just going on what I have seen online. Here we have Juniper but many around here refer to it incorrectly as “cedar”….but I know what they mean. I have also heard people call Siberian elm, “Chinese elm”….real Chinese elm looks completely different. I have lots of experience with the real thing growing up on the street I lived on. Not having hackberry around here I made the same error. But now I know the difference.
The op is from NC and common Hackberry is not native to most of NC. I planted Common Hackberry and Sugarberry. The Hackberries died and the Sugarberry is now close to 20’ tall. Scientific names are a worldwide language and identifier. Common names can vary wildly and be completely different trees from one person to the next.
And if you don’t want to burn the stuff you can use it for woodworking… Hackberry: Try it, you'll like it! | Woodworking Network
There's actually lots of Hackberry here, just never gotten a chance to score some. One day it'll happen
Hackberry here is everywhere. Can’t throw a stick and not hit one. I seldom cut any. Definitely buck and split as soon as you can , it’s a bear if left in rounds too long.
Mykidsdadd I used to go thru there 2-3 times a week going to & coming from Catoosa & Port 33 by Inola. That place was a hellhole at certain times of the day with train’s & auto traffic. Is the IDC Bar/Grill still open by Port 33?
As far as I know it is , I have actually never eaten there but hear it is pretty decent. Yeah, trains in this town SUCK !!
IDC had darn good food & the owners were super nice folks . The first night I was in there shortly after they opened he was chatting with me about where I was from, I told him I was there to get fertilizer at the Port & I had walked up there. He immediately told me he would give me a ride back to my truck; was very persistent about it. I told him I really appreciated the offer but the 1–1/4 walk would do me some good. Every time I was in there after that they would always come over & say hello. I believe they were starting a shuttle/van service running back/forth from Port 33. It’s been several years since I was there.
