Got one, close on the other. The top of the stack is apple. It's been a couple days so I'll give a hint. The reddish-orange ends scattered throughout the stack are from trees that have a flaky bark and one of the highest BTU content of any common softwood. They turn bright yellow in the fall.
Got it. It is indeed larch (tamarack). I didn't want to hint that they lose their needles in the fall, as that would have been a dead giveaway. Harvested a few small larches that came down in a storm, I remembered that they had a pretty high BTU value and dry very quickly. Good firewood, right up there with black cherry for BTU content. It's fun in a fireplace because it's like wild Rice Krispies on fire. Snap crackle pop everywhere.
