So the beautifully seasoned dead standing 18 percent moisture white oak i cut down turned out to be ash. It was a large tree at the base. When i was splitting the big rounds they were a bit stringy, i always thought it was a white oak cuz i only have a few ash trees on my property. Its mostly maple, white oak , hickory, cherry and all the birches. All the red oaks are monsters. The percentage of white oak is very high. So a few less btu’s but nonetheless its beautiful wood. I actually sold it to the neighbor. He asked if i had a couple of cords then said he actually needed three. Older guy always cut his own wood but isnt too confident dropping trees anymore. Hes had me drop some big ones in the past that were sketchy. He said he didnt care if it was wet. I wasn’t comfortable selling him wet wood to burn this year so i started cutting and splitting whatever dead standing and old rounds i had stacked around the property and already got two cords delivered to him. I could not imagine what it would be like to burn all that wet. I only charged him $675. It was so hard to let that sweet ash go. When he said he wanted three he was concerned that he was gonna leave me short on wood and i just chuckled. Heres the pic of the so-called white oak from the other day, it ended up being a cord+. I was also happy with my performance busting out two cord cut,split and delivered workin 3 hours friday and 4 yesterday. Today im going to work for my buddy Joe with the OWB to css huge pine logs and stack some cordwood Ill have pics of that later. Thank god hes got a nice tractor.
White oak heart wood will have a whiskey smell to it even after being dead for a few years. My favorite hardwood.
Since your neighbor will burn this sooner than you would, it's better that it's ash. It will dry out quickly for him.
This is Joes OWB setup, i stacked 1/2 of the five cords he got. The wood store is a harbor freight carport beefed up with cattle panels. The empty smaller one will be wood storage for winter and a greenhouse in spring.
My helpers saw in the back of my quad and his pic with his first pickerel. He was so excited shaking and nervous reeling it in. I think i was more excited than he was. My Dad was there too so it was pretty cool.
I really like your friend's repurposed carport shed. It looks strong enough to support the stacked wood without much cribbing. Holds a ton too.
