    Yeah, it really does look mapley to me, but without leaves its hard to tell what kind exactly.

    In about two and a half months you can tell the difference between a Red Maple and a Sugar Maple from half a mile away - the Red Maple's crown will be all red as the buds open, while the Sugar Maple will be green. Hard to use that method on a dead tree, but useful for calibrating your eye to the bark differences. I'd vote for Red Maple in this case.
