This isn't a done deal yet, but talked with a guy about a wood for work swap. He's coming by this weekend to check out the work I need done on my house. Then, from there, we figure out how many loads I take to his house. I've sold this family a couple of loads already. Anyone else do this? Any words of advice? Mods, If there is another thread like this please kick it to the curb.

If you can barter/trade great for you. It has never worked for me. I now just trade Benjamin's for Benjamin's.:)

I trade uncut, un-split wood for labor. The labor is helping me cut and split my wood for my firewood business. It's a win for me as I don't have to lay out cash when there is nothing coming in. I get all my wood for free trading parking for a dump truck and chipper for a Tree Service company. The only down fall was that I had to take the chips as well and have since been making Compost that I sell on Craigslist, with food scraps from my restaurant, a friend of mine has 4 horses and brings me about 4-5 gal. pails of manure a month. I made a crude watering system using ground water 2.5 feet from the surface here and a pump on a timer to water the compost and I turn it once a week with my front end loader. I thought the smell would kill me as I have a weak stomach but quite surprised that when done correctly there isn't much of a smell. I would go for the deal as long as you both win.

Get work done first, then deliver the wood.

True but as you learn with time a man's reputation usually proceeds him. Know who you are dealing with.

This guy has bought two loads from me before. A couple friends suggested I approach him to do work, as he is quite the handyman, and well, i'm not!!

We had the inside trim painted in the house for a cord of wood. That worked so well we had the guy come back and paint the outside trim and he took $250 off the bill for a cord.

Then traded two cords for a used tiller for the BX :).

    Then sold two cords outright.

Looking for a snowblower for the BX now and hope to work a trade. It can work but I know or have worked with everyone I traded with.

I've had some barters go bad in the past and that was enough. It ruins relationships and friendships if they go bad.

He is supposed to come over Sunday and look at the work. Was hoping my wood addiction/hobby would save me some $. Hoping for a win/win situation anyway.

With good men, all will be well - otherwise, can go south quick. Be sure you both know exactly what is expected from both ends - no surprises or one feeling they got the bad end of the deal. Cheers!

Couple showed up today to look at the work I wanted done. They will do all of it over a couple of breaks
I have from work. They seemed happy with the amount of wood I would bring out. Preliminary get together went very well!
