Plumbing question. What is better putting the water to water heat exchanger right after I enter the house or closer to the exsisting boiler. Wood boiler to house to 100ft. I then need to run more pipe inside about 60 ft worth to exsisting boiler. So heat exchanger as soon as I enter house or near boiler

Is your existing boiler dispersing the heat through house? So are you heating existing boiler with wood boiler? In other words. Are you plumbing up existing boiler in parallel or in series?

It will be in series. My boiler will have a lower starting setpoint than wood boiler so everything will be that same even hotwater heatwr.[IMG]

I want to first tell you I am not a boiler/plumbing expert. But that sounds like a good idea.

I have always been told though that your whole system will operate better if you can plumb them in parallel. Since you have not plumbed yet, you may want to consider this.

My boiler has a low loss header. So when a t stat calls for heat 2 circulation pumps start. One that supply the room baseboard and the one on the boiler. That will not change. But with the wood boiler tied in my propane boiler will be above its starting temp 150. So my propane will not know where the heat is coming from nor does it care. If it's gets to 148 the propane will fire off a low flame to bring up temp.

I will look into the parallel system though. I think we ruled it out because of my in direct hotwater heater that has demand

I think it will work fine that way. But I think what happens is your wood boiler shuts down more because it doesn't take it long to heat your other boiler. This results in a loss of efficiency and maybe more creosote at wood boiler. Sizing is also very important but you are past this stage now. Do you have your wood seasoning already?

Are you considering any additional water storage for heat in the future? When burning a wood boiler, the most efficient way to burn is wide open. What they call batch burning. Have you read about this at all? It is also very handy to have storage in the fall and spring shoulder seasons.

I have an indirect hot water heater on its own zone. I plumbed my wood boiler in parallel and it works great!

This is the first I heard about this..........I have a 80 gallon indirect hotwater now that I thought about using as storage. I have solar that runs the whole house so I can get a heat pump hotwater heater

I have a small storage, or what some call a buffer tank. At 400 gallons and insulated with closed cell spray foam insulation. Combine this with 60 gallons in the wood gun and it means my boiler can run longer, and then go a longer period before it has to fire back up. And if fire goes out the boiler and tank combo can throw heat out longer before oil boiler needs to fire.

What size house are you heating? Anything else but heat demand and DHW?

Sounds interesting. Is your system pressurized? My wood boiler stores 330 gallons. But I have a open system

    1. 1/4. Pex supply to 100 plate heat exchanger for house. And a pool heat exchanger off the 1 inch pex port. My boiler has 3 loops I can use. 2 1 inch supply and return. And 1. 1 1/4 supply and return

Closed system is better. And that is why a storage tank is needed.
