Yes barkless the key to any dead wood. It protects the tree when living but hold moisture in when dead thus it rots faster. Ive noticed a big difference on many woods barkless vs. bark on in their "shelf life".

I don't know all the details because it doesn't affect us, no ash trees on our property. The County wants everyone to cut down their ash trees because of emerald ash borer issue. IIRC, the County will cut and take away any ash tree within 20 feet of the road.

Our son's been cutting them down for a few of our older neighbors. A few of them burn wood so he helps buck and split them as well.

I don't get it...kill all the ash tree's with chainsaw, or let the lil green bug do it...what's the difference...dead ash tree's either way...stupid.
At least some trees are "resistant" to the bug...not so much to the saw...give 'em a fighting chance, let 'em be until the bug gets 'em!

I agree, but no sense arguing with politicians.

Because the larvae take a while to emerge and then move on as adults. That's when they go to the next tree. If you chip the tree small enough, the larvae are all killed, thus ending the life cycle for all those bugs in the tree

As far as I can tell, around here all that the city took down were mulched from top to bottom.

Got me to thinking. Just bought a deal on some new Stihl chains. One was a 36" semi skip square grind. Maybe give it a try on that big maple. I normally run full skip on the rare occasion i run the 36" bar. Thinking it could handle it. Wonder if this is pushing the limits for the 500??? No snide comments as tempting as they may be. Ill ask the forum.

I personally think you'd be totally fine doing that. Only concern would be oiling and if it wasn't putting out enough, you could just let it fast idle enough mid cut to soak the chain then finish.

Never ever mean anything serious, I'm always making comments in good fun. If it was ever taken any other way, I'm sorry.

None taken as i know its all in fun, especially from you. Meant to put a ;) next to it. This is a rare occasion where i wish i had a 90+cc saw. Maybe if i sell the 460 to sirchopsalot those funds will go towards one???

Did you depress the pin and turn your oiler to max? Works 500 runs a 32 and 36” light bar with full skip.

nice score on the Ash Brad.
Moving rounds or even bigger splits is out for me. Shelling off slabs with the Isocore breaks them down to moveable pieces, even if some need split again.
I would have bypassed that maple too. Waaay too much work for not enough return. I spent part of a day noodling Ash crotch or knobby pieces, just because there were a lot of them, but time and fuel wise it wasn't too efficient.

I hear ya, not fond of it, but had to get it done. I wasnt going to touch the maple but a new and different 36" chain has me itching to try it on big wood. Fairly easy location to work too and right next to where i can park so i dont have to schlep them far when sectioned. My fear is hitting metal. Not fun sharpening a 36" chain. Ive recently learned how much wood is in a 36" log. Thanks to walt for that info :salute:
Thread to follow soon. Hopefully this week.
