I used clear 6 mil poly last year which seemed to be pretty effective. I like to push the envelop on drying time. I can get most of my mixed hardwoods dry in 4 months or less.
I may have to start doing that although with my current drying bundle wood inventory ( around 12 cord) i may be set. I havent checked the dryest but hoping it will be ready very soon and ill be set for the cold weather. Ive got plenty for the future (i hope) but the wait as you know.
I tried a link but it didn't work. This is what I bought. Sent from my motorola edge plus 5G UW (2022) using Tapatalk
I'd be thrilled to death to have 12 cords of finished inventory! Even with smoking woods, I probably have 3.5 cords. But I turn it FAST and supplement with buying seasoned wood as well. Maybe one day I'll work as hard as you...probably not though.
Being self employed and wood being part of that i guess im blessed with the time to dedicate to it. Chronic wood hoarding helps too.
De Definitely! I would guess if I went out scrounging 3-4 times a week when I'm supposed to be at work, I would probably find myself self-employed! My hat is off to you for getting after it!
Sales started early on Saturday. I had 7 or 8 customers at the firewood stand and 3 more on Sunday. I also had an order for a tote of partially seasoned honey locust. Same guy wants to buy oak rounds to split himself. Sent from my motorola edge plus 5G UW (2022) using Tapatalk
Yesterday turned out great at the firewood stand. We were just getting home (after dark) and Mrs. WinonaRail asks if moving my stand further from the road (43' from the edge as required by the county) will hurt sales. We found 4 empty racks in addition to 5 bundles plus kindling that had just been picked up as we were leaving earlier. $100 for a Wednesday evening isn't too shabby in my book. Of course I had to fill it back up in the dark so...
Brief update on the firewood stand. $135 went out today. Last week was really strong and this week is off to a great start. I've been digging up all the old rounds I can find and split them to produce more dry wood to sell because I'm dangerously low. I had a new experience today. I got a notification from Venmo tonight that a customer picked up firewood (only a $15 order) and sent a tip! First time that's happened for a non-cash order. Not sure if you're interested in kindling or fire starter so I'll show you both. The first 2 are from Menards, a local box store. I sell them individually. The last one is a simple mesh bag from Amazon that I fill with a few small splits, splitter scraps and newsprint. Sent from my motorola edge plus 5G UW (2022) using Tapatalk
That would be picture #2. They aren't big sellers but they're a convenience, just like kindling. When I sell 18, the box is paid for and the rest is profit. You can break the nuggets in half and start 2 fires with each.
So I'm sitting at home eating lunch and my driveway alarm goes off. I figure it's USPS or FedEx. I see a white car stop in front of my garage and a guy gets out and starts walking around (warning bells sounding in my head). I put the spare rib bone down (knowing it will be cold when I get back) and go out to inquire about what said gentleman needs. Turns out I had talked with him by phone several days ago. He had texted me later about stopping by to see my firewood stand but got lost and didn't find it. Apparently he did today. I showed him a tote of shorts (although freshly split), which is what we had talked about. He was happy with the amount and the price and wants 2 delivered. Says he won't burn until next summer so green is fine. I told him I would gladly put him on the calendar for delivery. He does want to be able to stack in a rack, so I'll have to do some sorting as I load to weed out the really gnarly or super short stuff. But I can't really complain for $150 plus delivery to have someone take "waste" off my hands. As I've said before, I throw almost nothing away. Somebody will buy it.
It's a rainy day in northern Indiana. I had a small delivery waiting for me at home yesterday. Always good news to see more logs in the wood yard! The firewood stand was cleaned out again today. Bundles and loose stacks of mixed hardwoods are gone. Sales are already over $200 for the week. With the cooler temps, Saturday sales look pretty promising. No official data to report but I unzipped the cover last week and removed it Tuesday. The wood clearly still needs some time but I found some small split limb wood on top that was already dry and it went directly to the firewood stand. I'll let it air dry this month and then see what kind of readings I get.
