Sorry to hear about your injury. It's funny how a totally normal day doing something you've done hundreds of times suddenly goes terribly wrong. Sent from my moto z3 using Tapatalk
The mystery has been solved. When I got home from church I brought out the skid steer to dispose of the deer. Then I set about repairing the roadside stand after removing the wood from that rack. I just finished when my wife saw something next to the mailbox...car parts. I had seen a white Charger pulled over a few blocks away when I came home last night. A sheriff's deputy was behind it. I thought nothing of it although I did notice damage to the front. The bumper parts I found were white. I called the sheriff's office and they confirmed the accident with a deer. Of course nobody cared about my firewood stand... Sent from my moto z3 using Tapatalk
It would be a good start. And its only an addiction if i admit there's a problem. Ill admit to cutting a load of wood tomorrow!
If I knew who it was, perhaps. The sheriff's dispatcher didn't seem to want to be bothered, but she did acknowledge a car/deer accident, no property damage. Nobody came to the scene to verify that. We're looking at $45 in firewood plus my time repairing the roadside stand. I've already moved on.
Christmas week roadside firewood stand update: I pulled into my driveway after work yesterday intending to get the mail. I could see that I needed to refill much of the stand. A Grand Cherokee pulled in right behind me. I pulled up, then asked how I could help. He wanted a $40 stack, which was already empty. I asked him to load the only $20 stack I had left and I would top it off from my inventory. I went inside to change shirts and jackets, went out to the barn to get the skid steer and found a super duty Ford also in the driveway with another SUV parked on the road. I asked the customer to pull forward to my staging area so I could load him. I finished that customer. He's interested in a truckload after the first of the year. He drove down from Syracuse, almost 30 minutes away. I then set to work helping the people in the F350. They were buying a truckload (full IBC tote, 1/4 cord). They came from Cromwell, about 25 minutes, because they were supposed to get a delivery and the guy didn't show. The people behind were just helping them load so I thought I was finished. I had just hopped back in the skid steer when another SUV pulls in. They also wanted a $40 stack, so I loaded straight out of another tote. My cousin pulled in behind them to drop off a Christmas present so I took the opportunity to go inside. I finally got the stand refilled by 7:30 and we had some errands to run so we headed out. While we were gone, another customer texted me wanting a full tote. Not available. He took the $40 stack I had just refilled and needed change so he ran to the ATM. I suggested he consider a tote of shorts and uglies to fill up his truck. He ended up taking that as well. Yesterday's sales were $415, $565 for the week and almost $1K for the month. Not too shabby for a roadside stand in a rural community.
Thats awesome Gary! Looks like Santa came early for you. Well at least the reindeer didnt crash into the stand! Hows the finger healing up? Are you able to use it yet?
Me too. My dilemma with bundle wood. Im actually using some two year old oak to fill bundle orders. Im picky about the quality of wood that goes in them which is my setback. I sold roughly 2000 bundles this year. Calculates to roughly 16 cords.
That's my concern. I've purchased close to 2 cords of seasoned split firewood in the last 45 days. It's nearly gone and I'm also using the wood I processed myself. I'll probably end up buying another couple of cords soon to make sure I can get through the winter.
Reindeer are officially banned from my stand. The finger is doing pretty well. I'm about ready to break out the Echo CS-590 (pretty light for a pro saw) to see how I handle it. Not sure yet about vibrations but I won't know until I try. I've done a decent amount of splitting with no problems so far and I learned how to make bundles with one hand. I've adapted pretty well I think.
Not a problem keeping the hoarding pace up, but its pot luck what i score. A few cords of "primo" SS wood would be nice.
I hear you on that. About all we can do. Relearn with a damaged digit. Thinking back i did okay considering. Working with my hands my whole life and dealing with injuries its gets to be the norm. Be well, work safe and Merry Christmas my friend.
So 317 truckloads of top notch locust isn't enough? You need other wood too?! I have no doubt you'll scrounge and score exactly what you need.
Resilience is an valuable quality that isn't known to many these days. Merry Christmas to you and yours as well!
Did some resplitting of larger chunks Sunday afternoon. I bought half a cord of mixed hardwoods which had been seasoning for about 3 years. Most went into totes for loose stacks at the roadside stand while nice straight splits without bark were reserved for bundles. Sent from my moto z3 using Tapatalk
